I am not actually too concerned about cost in general. I don't mind paying for quality. It is just so disheartening when the hike is so massive.

Not actually looked into this, but how about doing the Poole to Cherbourg crossing as a foot passenger, then get a train to one of the big resorts. I would have thought getting to somewhere like Moutiers or Bourg St Maurice would be easy enough from Cherbourg.

Hi Michelle
I am in the same boat as you...I even work in the same area...Exeter. Although only a TA I've used some TOIL to negotiate getting away on Thurs 13th Feb from LHR to Geneva via Swiss Air...cost return with skis, out on 13th and return 20th is £167, transfer to Aosta Valley 48 euros each way to stay at La Thuile. Including staying at a 4 star hotel price pp works out over £1000 cheaper for 2 than a TO from weekend to weekend..Still have room in car for 2 more!! :D

I think may be Xmas & new year should be on your radar and then possible dust the car down and drive you tend to find the price of fuel does not go up compared to flights ….. 8)

Unfortunately we can't accrue toil at my school but I have decided that I will write to the head. As he has approved the other T/A the leave I may as well try my hand too. It is a different week. He can only say no I guess? Watch this space

I sympathise - thankfully The Lout is post school now, but ski hols in particularly were always very expensive.
I would have thought that if anyone is stuck with half-term and knows, absolutely knows that they have to have their ski then booking really early must be the best way.
I do remember there were some very attractive early offers back before the summer. Free lift passes, free ski hire, good discounts were all on offer. Free lift passes alone to one of the bigger resorts will save £500 for a couple.
