My criteria is pretty much the same as yours. And i have come up with (after les arcs in dec) La Clusaz.
But i agree that the Grand Massif is a good option in france. I loved it, short transfer too.

- Looking to go either 19/26 Jan '13
- Accommodation - now, thats a question. Would like to give Chalet a go this year, but we have the high likelihood that we will need a single room - I imagine that will be expensive (they will charge the same price as they would for 2?). Failing that want a good quality self catering apartment
- It needs to be ski in/out.

I went to la plagne a few years back and spent half a day in les arcs and seemed ok. Never considered grand massif or clusaz. Bit of research is required me thinks. Just want to avoid, 'same old...'

Serre Che is not small..250kms across 4 linked resorts 70% in the trees ...You would be pushed to ski it out in a week of hard skiing. There is also lots of good off piste as well.
Carving leaves me all on edge

You haven't said when you plan to go.
Could make a considerable difference to choice of resort.
Also type of accomodation and importance of things like ski in ski out.

Serre Che is a good bet for some where new ... but stay away from La Clusaz during mid Jan other wise you may run into me !!!!!

By the way I am not too sure what the fuss is about L G Massif, I have been a couple of times and it is Ok but nothing to write home about !!!!
