Mind you I reckon the forecasters are running scared after so many weeks of promising snow "next week".
Couple of days ago Tignes was saying 30/40cm snow now it is down to 15cm !!!
Hedging their bets I reckon.

Never mind, it will arrive!

I too am heading out to Chamonix for that weekend (Driving down on the 16th) to board 17th/18th/19th. I too was worried about the snow as i have been keeping a close eye on the web cams!
Last year we headed out with our boards in late november for a cheeky week and there was already snow on the foot of the return run at Le Tour. However we got in the car and drove around the mountain to Verbier which was open. Highly recommend that if the resort is still not ready for us! Maybe see you on the slopes!

I will be in Chamonix that weekend. I'm booked on an Avalanche Awareness course run by Chris Fecher of Tinderbox Back Country Ski School :D

The Chamonix ski areas have very limited snow making capacity (they normally don't need any) only 13% of the pistes are covered.

This is a good Chamonix valley specific forecast http://chamonix-meteo.com/index.php

Thanks i appreciate theres not much need but they do have a considerable amount of cannons on the grand montets and i was very surprised to hear there not using them yet and if / when they will be using them.

Forecast for the coming days looks like it could change everything.

Anyone know how long it will tke the now staff to get the areas ready should the snow come ?? hours days weeks ??????

thanks

On the Grand Montets only Bochard, Pierre à Ric and Marmottons have snow cannons. The runs equipped with snow making machines are highlighted in yellow on the piste maps.

It's been far too warm lately, November was 2.5*C warmer than the 30 year average To make snow you need the wet bulb temp to be less than -3*C and to get a reasonable output it needs to be at least -8*C. If conditions are right i.e. cold enough day and night it should take about a week to get a base of 50cm down.

If they get enough snow next week it will only take a day or two to prepare the pistes.

We are off to La Rosière at the same time (Xmas) and am not too worried - there will be snow, it is already falling (as of today). Anyone else heading to La Rosière?

Well people there seems to be the slightest glimmer of hope. theres been a real fine dusting over night in chamonix. only on higher ground seems to have fell as rain low down. does this mean they can start to add to it with snow cannons etc and actually now realistically open for the 10th like suggested on chamonet. or are there still factors stopping them. noticed the freezing thaw level is all over the place so guess that couls be a concern. fingers crossed ??????
