Oi, dont get Mr Mac started on the issue of altitude..... ;-)
I flew to Munich and picked up a car and drove to Mayrhofen, dead easy down the Autobahn, follow signs to Innsbruck and head up the Ziller Valley. The town tourist board has tons of accommodation on it, and my mate regularly stays for under 30 euros a night B&B, its cheap to eat and drink, and although the town is only 690m the skiing is high up the mountain.
I've skied here Xmas week and theres been tons of snow, there usually is as it has one of the best records for snow in the Tirol and is higher than normal for this region. Theres always Hintertux up the road.....
If you dont want a car, theres trains which take you right in to the village as well.
Seriously recommend the place, especially if you havent been before, its got a real buzz to it.

This is probably all true (including the mad bit).
Is flying out of the question? With tolls and the crossing, you're unlikely to save money by driving unless you take a few passengers.
But if the plane doesn't work then you should drive it!
Preparation is key to making the drive smooth; closely monitor the weather, time your journey carefully to avoid queues, blizzards and plagues of locusts and have everything handy in the car (shovel, chains, gloves, torch, water, de-icer, blah blah.).
Christmas Day skiing with your daughter? Priceless! Gotta be done. 8)

Ha Ha, no I wont TH.
So I am now on a differnt plan, and I know you guys have good ideas ref this.
My daughter has booked Tignes for a week at Christmas for a week, as you know my time off is limited so I am now contemplating driving , to get there on 24th stay for three days and drive back on 28th????
Am I mad, will this be too expensive?
One part of me says do it, an adventure looms, the other part of me says that the drive will kill me, will be too tired to ski and I will not look forward to the drive back?
Am I mad for thinking this?
TP

We drive every year, not had any problems at all, we take the 0230hrs ferry from Dover and usually arrive in Tignes about 3.00pm same day. Only stop a couple of times for toilet and a sandwich. I usually stop off at Bourg St Maurice at the Super U for fuel, it's usually cheaper than other places. Take a steady drive, stick to the speed limits and maximise your fuel efficiency. I'll be there xmas week as well, hope the snow gods are smiling.

Thanks Adders, TH and greedy, I think it worth the road trip, no buggering about in airports etc.
I am going to guage it in two weeks time as driving to Disney in Paris, I will know at the point when I get there, as Tignes would be another 7 hr drive approx.
The road trip to the Alps does excite me though, something different and never done before.
Can I hire Snow Chains?

Don't think you can hire snow chains but you can buy them at most service stations and the SuperU in Bourg, You could always ask on these forums as many have chains they no longer use. Good luck.
