Skiing now for 42 years - I bought my helmet 2 years ago for the same reason as stated before... my children questioning why they had to wear one and I didn't. Just come back from skiing with a group of mixed ability ladies - all now wearing a helmet. We noticed that in the groups of skiers we saw on piste they either all did or all didn't. Having said that - it keeps my ears beautifully warm and I don't notice it. Why not be safe! (One of our girls had recently skied in Serre Chevalier where her ski instructor questioned the fact that she wore a helmet - it would seem it was a very Non helmet resort!)

I have about 8 or 9 bobble hats and I don't have a lid.

From what I've read there's more chance of sustaining a head injury by falling down the stairs than skiing. I have no intention of wearing a helmet around the home either.

I remember when lids came out for cyclists a while back. There was a letter in a mountain bike magazine from a man who'd just bought a helmet for cycling and wanted to know if he should also wear it whilst driving.

3 points for guessing the nationality of the man.

I've worn a helmet for a few years - if only to set a good example to the kids.
I caught an edge on a simple piste at Gore Mountain last Xmas, and whacked my head hard on the icy base. Even with the helmet on, it left me dazed. Point is, everyone falls - and you can't choose what your head hits. Why take a risk? The downside to wearing a helmet is so little, and the potential benefit so great.
Now what was the question again?

I have worn a helmet when they've been included free with the skis, but my kids always wear one, i bought them one each yrs ago.
Someone said ski within yr ability. I am not so much scared about my kids hurting themselves while skiing; it is the idiots who bomb past them without giving them sufficient room and the idiots who CAN't ski or board, ridiculously out of their depth on runs, where they lose control and go into them that worries me. I make them wear a helmet on their bicycles, so do when skiing . I know i should wear omne also really. Must keep an eye out for a good offer in aldi end of season!

The fact that you were wearing a helmet meant that you only avoided cuts and abrasions ..the reason why you were dazed is because the brain was moving within the skull ..the helmet made no difference.

Fact: skiing has not become more dangerous.

Fact: it is not compulsory to wear head protection.

Fact: A couple of high profile injuries and deaths were blown out of proportion by the media

1.
skiing may not have become more dangerous but there are more people skiing; more variations of how to get down (boards, skis etc) more people going too fast for their ability.

Its not the skiing that is dangerous it is the other idiots on the slopes.

2:
It is compulsory in most places for children to wear head protection.

3:
Any death is a death too much. Yes there are high profile deaths which grab media attention, but does that matter.

So I skydived for 20 years and saw a lot of changes in the sport...
hard hats were for beginners till they got used by the top teams, then they became a status symbol.
Did they prevent deaths - NO
Did they improve the performance of people - YES

Why because people had a little more confidence to push themselves without fear of banging their head.

So for skiing, a hard hat will reduce injury if you fall and smack your head.
Wearing one will give some people more confidence.

Besides, they are a fashion thing for the younger generation who push themselves a little more.

Its about choice, but why get passionate about not wearing one. Go with the flow and if you get a benefit - eg warm ears - why worry?
