Yep
bandit is right - probably the most compelling argument in favour of the added safety of a helemt.
When I was working out their I had buckets of injuries amongst guests and I can only remember one where the wearing of a helmet would have made much of a difference (stiches needed on scalp after mono skier came in at head height out of control).
But the environment has changed in the last 20 years or so.
Not so much busier but faster definately.
And the accesibility of more advanced skiing to less experienced skiers, as bandit says, has made a difference.
I can see the sense in wearing a helmet, but am still going to remain a helmet free zone and trust to my attention to keep out of trouble.

Had to eat a Lidl digestive with my coffee this morning .....
Not sure what their lids are like but .....

People have not changed. Pistes are different and equipment is easier to use. It's now easier to go fast, as grooming is taken to extremes, and natural terrain is flattened.

If you get hit by some of these idiots a helmet is really not gonna be much good firstly the back will take the hit with a result of a possible broken spine then your pelvis might possibly shatter and then maybe a broken tib and fib then lastly you might land on your head. Where's that suit of Armour ......

The only reason I don't wear one is that I find rental ones very uncomfortable
and being a student I cannot currently afford one that I like or find comfortable enough to wear all day

I bought a helmet because I was worried about my daughter ski-ing very fast without one, and I thought that if I wore one it would encourage her to wear one.
I was very glad I'd bought it because I fell over and ended up sliding downhill very fast on my back headfirst. It would have been awful if I'd hit something with my head unprotected.
And I am ski-ing much faster than I used to. Using the 3 Valleys Satellite application on one of those new phones we found out that we were doing something like 70 km/hr (I've forgotten now exactly how fast it was) carving down a red run in a lesson last February. And I'm sure I've been faster than that schussing down the straight. It seems much easier to go very fast on the new skis as compared with the old ones (I first skied over 40 years ago on the old skis with cable bindings).
My helmet only cost £35 in a ski shop attached to a dry ski slope here in the U.K. It is very comfortable and once I've put it on I totally forget about it, and it has vents in the top for the 'steam' to escape when I'm really working hard.
I didn't want to buy a helmet, but now I have one I am very fond of it :D
I realize there are plenty of other bits of me still unprotected but my head seems the most vulnerable and least fixable (luckily the shoulder and toe I broke ski-ing healed - eventually!).

Having give away my helmet to a friend who needed it more than I did at the time I went out and brought a new one a couple of days ago .
I tried loads on and the winner was the a 'Sandbox'. Doesn't sit on top of the head like a mushroom and only has minimal padding inside not a saggy liner like some of them .
It did feel great last year not using one but now I've found one that fits and looks ok it wont bother me wearing it, also a good mount for the gopro... woop woop
