You may mock but we got a free lollipop (each!) for being the first customers of the season in the very nice (and very arty - as in lots of art on the walls) resto near the top of the main gondola in LGB the other week... although there were no chips as the potatoes hadn't arrived...

I would never mock, LGb is a wonderful place, I just have a vivid imagination, but no Pomme frites disgraceful

I have skied the past 4 years in Austria and only got back from Mayrhofen on sunday which is not the cheapest in Austria I have been to. The difference, I was normally paying E 3.20- E 3.80 for a half litre either in the town or on the mountain.
Not to rub it in to much but I had a huge plate full of Vienasnitzel and chips and half litre of lager for E 9.30 on the most expensive mountain bar/restaurant we used. Even with pound being poor against the Euro it still really only reflected London pub prices. Allez Le Austria!!

Drink halfs it would have only been 2.5E.

No you've lost me there!! Perhaps I confused the issue when I said it was 5 Euros a pint which is near as damn it a half litre!! So if it was E5 a half litre in campsite bar I would suggest it would alot more on the French Alps to buy beer, hence my comparing the prices to Austria.
If of course you just meant drink less and spend the same amount, then I might as well not go out at all and be a right bore and save alot. I am not of course advocating that you need to drink to enjoy yourself, but sometimes it helps.
[b]Got to go I've got a meeting to catch!!

I have met an awful lot of people who drink who are very boring, so the two do not go hand in hand, and yes I do get confused very easily, it's an age thing you know

Hello Peeps

I'm new to this forum, but I feel I can comment on the issue of Food and Beer prices.

France is incredibly expensive, Italy or Austria is much much more reasonable. The best bet is to go Half board, that way you only have to fund the purchase of beer, and you can steal a few bread rolls and a bit of cheese from the breakfast table to keep you going during the day.

Last year we skied in Passo Tonale, and later on at Belle Plagne. The difference in expense was scary. So much so that we only went out once or twice in France, we returned to the apartment for our lunch.

In Passo Tonale we were in the pub for apres ski happy hour, 2 beers for 4 Euros - every evening. The food in the hotel was great, and the lift pass was 90 Euros instead of 230 ! If your keeping an eye on the costs, head to Italy.

Isobel

was in Meribel Mottaret before Christmas
Restaurant Cote Brune - lunch
Beer €3.70 25cl
Hamburger and chips €16.50
Salad goats cheese €13.50
Omelete ham and cheese €12.00

The waters free

You can eat next door a lot cheaper, its a snack bar and you sit outside (they have umbrella's with heater)we normaly go there but is was cold and wanted to sit inside.

Prices at Rond Point were similar, though they do have a "self Service" counter on the decking (over to the right) that is cheaper and does hamburgers and hot dogs.

If you get over to Couchevel 1850 go for Bar Le Jump at Croisette
Hamburger and Chips €12.00
Salad Savoyard €9.50
Bowl of chips €5.50
its one of the cheaper places to eat, or go into the shopping mall which is a bit further down and there is a great sandwich place just to the right opposite teh newsagents.
