Bandit, did not realise that. I thought s & r was if you were caught off piste and basically they had to dig you out and chopper you out of there..
Well, I need another insurance as I will be cancelling that one. I have a couple of existing medical conditions and some companies put a huge (almost double!!) Supplement on it.
I think I have a job to do when I get in!!

You are quite sensible to take them all with a pinch of salt, I do also.
There have been examples of avalanches crossing open pistes, and occasionally (wrong place, wrong time) skiers have been caught up. A rescue team won't stop to ask if you have cover before they start digging, that would be cruel.
However, I do believe that you should take a really deep look at your current Policy and double check that search and rescue cover is not included within another section (before cancelling it) A job for a quiet evening in...checking the weasel words )
If it's not there, you might want to consider buying supplementary cover in resort to meet the shortfall, especially if your current Insurance works for you in all other aspects.
Carre Neige is one example:

Many countries offer top up cover at Lift Ticket windows.

Iceman,
If you're ski-ing in the 3 valleys you can buy the carre neige insurance cover for search and rescue etc. when you buy your lift pass - it's something like 3 euros per person per day and I reckon it's well worth it.
I tried to get snow sports cover for my older daughter with the NFU (who insure the farm etc.) but they refused totally because she has ME/CFS. So I bought it with flexicover.co.uk who will cover you even if you have pre-existing conditions and I picked the option of not covering her for ME related travel/holiday problems so I didn't have to pay any extra and I am just hoping for the best. As far as I could understand (insurance policies are horrible things to read) they will cover us for off-piste as long as we are within the resort boundaries and they will pay search and rescue.
Hopefully Bandit will not discover that this company is a load of rubbish, and I've never used them before so I'm just being optimistic plus I am doing it through Igluski and I reckon they're pretty good :D

AllyG, all Insurers, offer something to suit someone, somewhere. It's a case of finding the right policy that suits what you want to do. Problems arise because we occasionally confuse what we think we've purchased, with what's in the Contract )
Flexicover have been around for quite a while, and you seem to have done plenty of studying of the small print :D

Appreciate the feedback guys, i can't take the risk of not insuring my medical condition. The £10k claim I had was in relation to that medical condition, ambulances, brain scans, intensive care....it all stacks up
I will have a look tomorrow night, speak to Columbus. I can cancel foc as I am still in the 14 day cancellation period.
I will report back. Still open to any suggestions. My medical conditions are asthma and epilepsy :(

Thanks Bandit that's very reassuring about flexicover :D
Iceman, I think Flexicover will cover you for pre-existing conditions but you will have to declare them all and I expect pay a higher premium.
The Ski Club of Great Britain's ski insurers will also cover you for pre-existing conditions but I got a bit lost trying to fill in their forms on-line and gave up
I even phoned them and they just told me to have another go on-line. So I found another insurer (Flexicover).
