I've worn a helmet since the second day on skis ...... and it was personal choice !!!. Back in those days I was down on the ground more than standing on the skis -- and there were always boarders coming towards me. I wanted something harder than my head for them to glance off from.

This November 1st it became law in Nova Scotia that everyone on the snow at a ski hill is required to wear a helmet. I don't agree with being forced to wear something that only provides 1) a false sense of security and 2) a convenient place to store the goggles. But they do provide warmth and a good place to mount a camera.

The fine for being on a ski hill in Nova Scotia, without wearing a helmet is in the $250.00 range. About 95 % of skiers have been wearing helmets for the past few years. Generally the only demographic not wearing helmets seems to be 18 to 30 year old females. Must be a hair doo thing.

Interesting. I assume that means not wearing anything on their heads?

A friend of mine NEVER wears a hat, no matter how cold it was, sometimes she might stretch to a headband but that's it.

I however carry off the helmet/hat hair look very well.

That's the way it seems Tony. Just some cool sun glasses. But there is a small percentage (of this small group) that will go with the head band, as Nelly says of her friend. Just to have something to cover the ears, I expect, with the cool sunglasses. The tresses flow freely ! But this is their personal choice. At the hills here, they sometimes have contests for the "best" helmet hair. Put your pride in you back pocket - we are all in the same boat .. But the one thing that annoys me is people that wear helmets trying to tell the person not into helmets, that they should be. Guess that's why I dislike the new law here now. The last day of the season here last spring I left my helmet inside the lodge and skid "free". The devil made me do it ! It was a great feeling. Mind you it was sunny and about +10°C. Funny thing ... it was the day of my first fall of the season. Guess I was unbalanced without the helmet :P :P

Accidents happen, fact of life. I'd rather wear a helmet now than look back and wish i had.
I saw a pic once, on here i think, of a sharp piece of rock embedded in an helmet after a fall. Not pleasant.

I agree. Even with all due care ... accidents will happen. Saw one last winter where a young fellow lost control and became entangled in a bunch of trees and rocks. They had to cut the trees to get him out. A helicopter was almost called to take him to the hospital. It didn't look very good for him. He was knock, knock, knock'in on Heaven's door. He did however survive but he did have a cracked skull and a really bad headache for a while. It was about the first time he didn't happen to be wearing his helmet. Might have been a bit less damage if he had it on.

Also the chair lift frame and even the safety bar can give you a nasty headache. The helmet has saved me a few of these!

Snapzzz, it was me that took and posted the photo you've referred to. The owner of the helmet who is a pal, received a grazed forehead from the rock point. And quite a shock when he saw the damage.
