mike from Alty wrote:Like most of you have been a lover of the snow for many years and have mastered skiing and boarded to a reasonable standard. I never ever wore a helmet in all the years of winter holidays and random ski/boarding weekends.

I was hit by a boarder 2 years ago who put me in Hospital and I have still have a problem with my shoulder because of the accident. Guess what? he was wearing a helmet and it was his head that struck me first, he was truly air born at the time. Not saying the outcome would have been different one way or the other, my point is the helmet smashed my shoulder and I was injured and he was fine because he was wearing one!

I am off Skiing next week to La Clusaz, I am taking a helmet for the first time, personal choice but kind of think we are getting to that point that it's not essential but a consideration, just in case you become air born! :) .

For a moment there i thought you were going to say that helmets should be banned because they can cause injures to others.....How ironic would that be?

In France children under a certain age in Ski school must wear helmets. Thats the FACT that I know.

Whether they have to wear them all the time outside ski school and what age is the limit, I dont know sorry

I never did (wear a helmet) :oops: ;

however, after reading a lot on this subject within various previous topics on this forum, I am seriously considering the possibility of getting one for next season. (so, come close to winter time, I'll have to start searching again the forum pages to decide on what type/brand/features I should be looking for :roll: )

Cat,
When my daughter and I bought helmets a few years ago we went to a ski shop which sold lots of them, and tried on a whole load of them until we each found one that fitted comfortably/snuggly on our heads, was compatible with our goggles, and had big air vents. Mine was very cheap (£35 I seem to remember) but my daughter's was more expensive (something like £70 and the same for matching goggles).

Once we've put them on we both totally forget they are there, they're so comfy. And they are very handy because they've got clips at the back so you can attach your goggles to your helmet and stick them up on top of your helmet out of the way when you're not using them.

You can also buy helmets with mini speakers in them, but we never listen to music whilst we're ski-ing, so we didn't bother with those ones.
