We're driving down tomorrow, staying overnight and hitting the slopes on Saturday en route to a chalet in the Aosta valley (not in a resort, but with access to Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila)

According to the forecast, Chamonix will be sunniest on Saturday - would you ski there or carry on to Courmayeur where the weather isn't likely to be so good? Which is the easiest to just jump out of the car and buy a lift pass? (We'll get an Aosta valley pass if Courmayeur, but a day/afternoon one if Chamonix).

We're a family of four - 2 adults, 2 teens. Reasonable intermediates but will be looking to get our ski legs back rather than go for anything ambitious on the first day.

thank you - can't wait wherever we go!

Chamonix has car parking at all of the uplift bases. For Brevent there is a multi storey nearby (pay) For Flegere, car park is at the base of the cable car (used to be free-not sure now). You might choose to drive up to Le Tour/Vallorcine, for a nice cruisey day. Large car park at the base of the gondola.

I would suggest that Le Tour is probably the nicest 1st day area, it's a lovely area in the sunshine, but hard work when the visibility is poor. Good intermediate terrain on piste.

The off piste there is also good, however the risk of avalanche remains Considerable, and particularly with this area, what look like straightforward off piste pitches have terrain traps.

Thanks bandit.

We're not off-piste ski-iers (at least not intentionally) - so sounds like Le Tour would be perfect, especially as it means hitting the slopes earlier on Saturday and hopefully in sunshine.

As often is the case I have to confer with Bandit on this one. I love Le Tour in the sun the views over the Chamonix Valley are superb. With the snow being good you can ski back down to the car park which is not possible from Flegere. Get there early if you can to get parked up nearer the gondala.

Saying that I have never managed to get to Courmayeur - I felt the travelling would waste too much precious ski time

Hope you had an awesome time in Chamonix. We skied Alyeska today in Alaska. It was a great powder day. It sounds like Chamonix has the best snow. that coupled with sunshine cannot be beat. We will bwe in Chamonix in two weeks. would like to meet and ski with fun loving people. Let me know if you will be skiing then. Auvoir, Terry

Judging by the jam on the snow motorway heading towards Mont Blanc as we headed back from Courmayeur you'd be lucky to reach either very quickly.

Courmayeur is lovely although the skiing is a bit limited. Fine for a long weekend but an intermediate would ski it out fairly quickly.

never been to Courmayeur, but you will have a great time in Chamonix. I would agree that Le Tour would be a good first day, or even Les Houches.

Have a good one.
