That does sound pretty awful! Poor you.

If it was me, I'd go to bed with an ice pack on it (or frozen peas etc. if you haven't got an ice pack), and then go and see an osteopath in the morning. Depending on what they say, I'd either cancel or go on the holiday.

Hope you're better soon,

Ally

yep two probs osteopath - finding one and getting an emergency appt tomorrow would be a miracle then the second one surely it will be noted on my medical records and if i do go and do my back in on hols and claim on insurance it will be void so the ice pack is on and I'm alternating with heat/ice packs and plenty of pain killers and a lots of positiove thoughts hopefully I have just strained it and rest tomorrow will help Ive decided Im not going in to work and staying in bed after the school run - Ill make a decision at lunchtime and see how I feel if Im still in a lot of pain I will book in wiht dr and get a certificate and cancel (cant belive Im saying those words) but hopefully I will feel more like normal and will just stick to blues and green for the first few days and take it easy I suppose. This holiday is a big thing my ex left me and daughter 2 yrs ago - prior to that me and daughter went skiing at least 2x a year and Ive been looking fwd to this trip for loads of reasons mostly I love skiing but also its confirmation I can do anything on my own and have moved on thats is why I am so gutted ah well tommorrow is another day

I may well be wrong, but I would think that if a qualified osteopath, physiotherapist or whatever, saw your back and put it in writing that they thought you were okay to ski, you should be able to phone your insurers and tell them this (and e-mail it as well) and then I reckon you'd be covered.

It is easy for me, because I live in the country, and I have a local osteopath who knows me pretty well, and as long as he was physically available, I'm sure he'd see me in an emergency.

It all depends how much damage you've done to your back - hence the importance of seeing a professional, able to assess you.

I have had a really bad back, put an ice pack on it, and been practically okay the next day. But I have also damaged my back (by picking up my baby daughter in her baby seat) and been unable to walk for 10 days. So I can't really say if you'll be able to ski or not. And my husband damaged his back and was practically unable to walk for about 6 months.

The sensible thing is to cancel the holiday, get the insurance money, and re-schedule when your back is better. But I think you should wait another day before you do this.

Best of luck

Ally

Rosie ... depends what you've done to your back.
If you've pulled a muscle then chances are you'll be ok. If you've upset a disc (where the muscles over compensate for the damage) then that's another thing.
Time is the only gauge .. good idea with the voltarol. See how it feels in the morning.

If it's muscle strain then soaking in a hot bath does wonders. I would get as many as you can in the next 24 hours along with the anti inflammatory's and plenty of rest. (In my experience Neurofen Plus are the best.)

Good luck I hope you are feeling much better tomorrow. :-)

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I use ice after exertion and heat later when relaxing which is what I've been told and works very well for me. Doing it wrong can cause harm.

Don't think about cancelling just yet, be positive until it's not possible any more

Best of luck

Caron, I think you are right and ice should be applied in short bursts after a muscle sprain/strain. Heat is soothing after the initial swelling has gone down. I am only speaking from my own experience. I am an AS sufferer and as a result have had many a back strain/sprain. For me having hot baths (as soon as I am mobile) really does help.
