Given the recent snowfall a group of mates (4 blokes)have booked an impromptu long weekend skiing just before christmas. Getting flights into munich and driving to Austria. Not going to book accomodation until last minute. If snow is not great lowdown we will drive to Ischgl but if snow is good all over then we were going to do the shorter drive to either Soll, Kitz or Saalbach. Anybody been to all 3 and have a preference for one over the others (we are all intermediates)? Oh and we like a drink.

Whether to go to Kitzbuehel or Saalbach Hinterglemm kind of depends on the weather at the time. It's a case of balance scales between the two, depending on snow at the time. Though one is much better and nicer than the other, the nicer one, Kitz. isn't renowned for early snow.

Though it's the best resort in the southern Salzburgerland area by quite a distance, with a good amount to travel to which isn't far also. Saalbach is nice, a good amount to ski around but far less than Kitz (though Leogang is small but isn't far, and snow is more reliable, and actually the Zell/Kaprun area is 25 minutes drive from Saalbach, also on the superskipass card). Kitz. first, but if snow is not great, Saalbach's a good option, with Zell/Kaprun close.

Kaprun was excellent last week after the recent snow falls - we had a great time. I believe Zell was due to at least partially open on Thursday. When we left there was snow right down to the town and the snow cannons were working none stop.

I guess it's next weekend when you're going.

Kitzbuehel Bergbahn is reporting just less than 50 percent of slopes open. This week has forecast for the Bergbahn around 26 cm of new snow, so hopefully this can go up to over 60 percent by the time I arrive in late December. 26 cm would be O.K., maybe a little better than average through a good winter, but there has been not much snow in the last few weeks before.

The kitzalps.com website shows that there are 3,440 snow cannons, though I suppose that that's throughout the Kitzbuehel Alpen area (7 ski regions in Tyrol and Salzburgerland).
