Hello-

I will be studying abroad this spring in turin. I was wondering if it would be worth it for me to bring my skis there with me. I will not have a car and will be relying on the public transportation to get me around. Will I be able to go to the ski areas as a day trip? How much money do the lift tickets cost on average? What are some good areas to visit? I am somewhere in between an intermediate and expert. Thanks

Bryan, yes you must take your skis! From Turin you have the whole of the Aosta valley within easy reach. Not sure about public transport for all the resorts but Courmayeur at least is just the other end of an Autoroute from Turin and there are regular buses from the Airport.

When will you be there? You can usually ski late into the season at Cervinia but if you're there as early as March you have a huge choice. There is fantastic off-piste around Alagna, which links into Champoluc and Gressoney, and good heli-skiing from Monte Rosa. You can also do the Vallee Blanche descent of Mont Blanc for a day to really remember.

There's also Pila and La Thuile (stay in Italy, ski into France).

Most of the above is within a 2 hour drive of Turin.

Ski passes are around 30-40 Euros/day. If you're going to be around for a good chunk of the season think about a Aosta Valley season pass - which will include most of the resorts in the valley. They do multi-day passes that cover non-consecutive days - see here for prices.

Make friends quickly when you get there, and make it obvious that you're a skier - you may be able to hook up with some local skiers then and blag lifts to the mountains at the weekends.

Thanks for the helpful info. I will be there from january to may. I was looking on the bus route website and they seem to have buses going to the ski areas in the morning and leavng them around 5:30. Money will be tight so I dont think I will be able to do the heli skiing although I bet that is amazing. I cant wait to get there. Thanks again!

Cool... I would love to be in Turin for a season! If you're going there to study you may well be able to get some kind of student discount on the skipass and maybe discounted fares on public transport too.

You are now in Turin I assume. You should have discovered that the local bus Company SAPAV do e good deal to Sestrierre on Wednesdays for about €39 including skipass and travel.(The skipass alone would cost in the region of €28 so it is not a bad deal at all. The alternative would be to get a train to Pinerolo(about €3) and then get a coach to Sestrierre.

You can get a train from Turin which takes about 90 minutes to Saux D' Oulx where the skiing is normally great but not at the moment due to lack of snow.

Hey there,

I've just moved back from Turin and it is a really cool city and easy access to most slopes. there is a bus that goes to sestriere from the corner of Corso Vittorio and Via Sacchi (where the airport coach goes from) and its something like 12E return. the trains at porta nuova will bring you to sauze d'oulx and bardonecchia within about an hour. there's also a bus from porta susa (other train station) to cervinia that takes approx 2hrs.

Heading back this weekend for 5 days so hopefully the snow sit will be better.

hope this helps,

Keith
