Re:Reusch Ski gloves

Dave Mac posted Dec-2013

I go through gloves. It is always the right glove that goes. The right glove holds down the skis, when carried on the shoulder. Also, when single handed holding. When spitting and re-setting the skis, it is the dominant hand.

So, I am always looking for glove replacements. Mostly I use Reusch ~ I first chose them because they seemed well engineered, the same reason I chose Reichle boots. My first pair of Reusch gloves lasted just three seasons, about 20 weeks skiing.they were really good, but the right glove is shredded.

Our good US J2skier friend, Pavel, once sent me a pair of gloves to an address in Vail where I was heading a couple of years back, but they never made it, ~ I didn't realise the use of PO boxes in the US, and they did not connect.

So, I am looking for a source of Reusch ski gloves, at a reasonable cost. I suspect I may have to wait until I am in Austria. The standard must be better than recreational, must be leather, with a double palm.

For those who doubt Reusch, they specialise in ski and goalkeeping gloves. Almost every football world cup, and 75% of major ski competition trophies have been held in Reusch gloves. This has no influence on my choice, I have used them for many years of my ski life.

I would be interested to know of sources for these gloves.

Dave, you can extend the life of those gloves with "Tool Dip" or similar. It's a plastic dip meant for covering the bare metal handles of hand tools. I burn through the regular Reusch gloves in a season, but get another two or three seasons by repairing the worn areas with tool dip. It will even cover completely worn through holes. It comes in black, and is hardly noticeable. It will cover loose stitching and hold seams together. notice the finger tips and palm in the photo. This application is about three seasons old. Though I do wear other gloves, these have seen at least 100 days of use since the repairs.

because I'm so inclined .....

I've got a pair Dave - you just need to pop over to France about five years ago... hope that helps...

Quality is good but I've had a few pairs and found them to be warm but not as breathable (hands get sweaty, gloves get damp inside) as other brands.

Thanks Trencher, I am not aware of any such dip in the UK. Interesting concept. My right glove has more air than glove, I managed to extend one season with a roll and a half of gaffer tape.

Anyway, it is quite apparent that you do not keep your edges sharp enough!

Admin, you are SUCH a comfort.

Are you sure that is not just abject fear?

Thanks, Dave. I have already checked TK maxx, generally only have the cheapos, (quality, not price), but it may well depend on the particular local store. Very little on their web site.

The glisshop, on the other hand looks to offer quality and value. But a glove is really the kind of item you need to get touchy feely with. Also, I would not trust a size off the internet. I have a 10 1/2 size Reusch that is a perfect fit, and another brand at 10 1/2 that I could do a snow dance in.

Even so, although the gloves look good, there is only one that is offered in my size, and I'm not wearing lime green for anyone!

Thanks for the suggestions.I am now looking for a tardis that will transport me back 5 years...

I've been repairing and reinforcing all sorts of outdoor gear including ski gloves with McNett Aquasure (now called Aquaseal) for over 25 years it's a moisture cured polyurethane adhesive / sealant so it's very tough and sticks to most fabrics. There's now a similar British product on the market that's a bit cheaper and not as viscous called Stormsure. The stuff Trencher mentioned is called Plasti Dip http://www.frost.co.uk/brands/plasti-dip-coating/plasti-dip-coating-429ml.html

If you can't extend their life I would look at other brands as well as Reusch. The top end Reusch gloves are very good, but most of the rest are pretty ropey, poor quality leather with cheap liners and insulation. Sport Burkhart in Garmisch-Partenkirchen sells nothing but Reusch gloves http://www.reusch-skihandschuhe.de/

The best ski gloves are made from goatskin rather than cow or sheep hide, have Goretex liners and good quality insulation such as Primaloft. Other brands with a good selection of good gloves include Hestra, Black Diamond and Leki. I would wait until you get out to Austria, you might get lucky in the New Year sales.

As a stop gap you could try a pair of Venitex leather ski resort workers gloves http://www.deltaplus.fr/index.html 15 quid from Snowshepherd http://shop.snowshepherd.co.uk/epages/es122028.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es122028/Categories They will need waterproofing before use, don't use Dubin as it contains stuff that's detrimental to the leather and the stitching, wax based products such as Nikwax are much better.

Thanks SB, that is good information. I prefer to stay with Reusch. Not that I am averse to change, but it can be a pain to make achange, and not be satisfied.I have been happy with all my reusch gloves.

I appreciate the glove protection product info, I will follow that up.

I couldn't vouch for the animal that made up my previous gloves, just that they have have always served me well. Also, I really like that they are soft, yet give a good grip.

You are probably right in suggesting I wait until I get to Austria. One of my old instructor friends is now managing a ski shop in Wörgl. It's just that my No1 son has volunteered to get me some for Christmas.....

Dave, here's a UK supplier. http://www.frost.co.uk/plasti-dip-the-multi-purpose-rubber-coating/

It also patches clothing.
