All,

Thank you for reading my post, I'd much appreciate any advice that anyone can offer me.

I will be flying into Munich from Sydney for a 4 day business activity in late January. Whilst in the area I have decided to take a long weekend in Kitzbühel before returning down under.

I'm thinking that the train from Munich to Kitzbühel on the Thursday afternoon (Jan 31st) is the easiest way to transfer, rather than hiring a car? This is making an assumption that once in Kitzbühel, I won't need a car as moving between the town and the slopes is easy through the use of buses, gondolas and ski lifts? Does this sound like a good plan?

I'm also really keen for some advice on where best to stay? I'm looking for a nice hotel with a good restaurant and amenities like spas and a pool maybe? Budget is not too much of an issue, I'm happy to pay for a good hotel. Location is important as I'll be looking to explore the nightlife whilst having great access to the slopes by day? Is this possible?

It's likely that I will fly out of Frankfurt on the Monday, so I will get the train back to Germany on Monday morning so I can have 3 full days on the slopes.

Thanks again for reading, your response will be warmly received.

Kind Regards

Ross

Yeh I would do the train rather than a car, but either works OK. But you wont need the car once you arrive as long as you stay in town and/or dont mind a ski bus.

For hotels use tripadvisor.com

But.......you are aware that Kitzbühel is the #1 most expensive and upmarket resort in Austria?

I'm only 15 minutes up the road from Kitzbühel but never go there myself. Not my kinda scene and I prefer other ski areas actually.

"schicki-micki" is the word!

Hey Johnny,

Thanks for your response. I didn't realise you needed to be "schicki-micki" to fit in at Kitzbühel... I did think the hotels looked a little expensive, but I just though that was just the cost of skiing in Europe?

I'm not committed to Kitzbühel as a destination any longer, can you advise alternatives? I was looking at Garmisch-Partenkirchen originally as it was the first suggestion when I googled "skiing near Munich"... I changed to Kitzbühel when I read somewhere else that it had huge snowfields.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen any good? Or is there somewhere better not a million miles from Munich? Advice again will be gratefully received.

Hi Ross, welcome to J2ski. I ski in the same resort as Munich Johnny, but I do like to go to Kitz every few years. Most times it is to connect with the Hahnemkahn downhill. I like the town, too, and because I have an interest in Alpine art, Kitz has one of the best art gallery/museums.

You can email the tourist board, and ask them about hotels. Because Johnny & I are so close to Kitzbuhel, hotels is not something that we address.

When there, you might take a bus and ski the schiwelt one day. It isn't far.

For the train, look at the DBB site. The station is located within the airport. You will need to change at Munich Ost and Worgl. Don't buy your train ticket until you are in the airport. (In case your plane/luggage is late). If there is a large queue, (some people seem to tell their life stories once they reach the counter), the ticket machines are at the side, and quite easy to work.

Any other questions, fire away.

Thanks Dave.

I'm looking at more options now - "Kitz" does sound interesting with the art gallery/museum. Had a good look at Söll and surrounding area but accommodation is scarce for the weekend I will be around so may be a struggle. Also looking at Innsbruck as a base to ski Igls etc as accommodation is abundant. My understanding is that the slopes around Innsbruck aren't the best Austria has to offer, but I may have to take what I can get access to.

What are your thoughts on Söll and Innsbruck?

I'll take your advice and email a few tourist boards ref accommodation and see if they can help - thanks for that.

I downloaded the DB Navigator app onto my iPad a couple of days ago - it's great for looking at different destinations/routes to understand how accessible they are. I'm actually in Munich for a few days before I hit the slopes so I guess I'll just get on at Munich OST then change at Worgl. Looks like I can go direct if I end up deciding on Innsbruck.

Rossco,

have you thought about Kirchberg?

Basically the same slopes as Kitzbuhel but on the opposite side of the hill.

Its a big enough town with lots of bars, restaurants and accomodation but much cheaper than Kitz.

The Apres ski scene is a little quieter but still plenty going on well into the night.

Loads of Aussies in Kitz / Kirchberg so you should feel at home!

Ive stayed at the Alpenrider hostel in Kirchberg which is full of Aussies / Kiwis and Brits. It might be more basic than you are looking for but its a young lively crowd. Place is run by an Aussie so might be worth contacting him even if it's just to get a steer on the place.

Best of luck.

I am a bit in love with Westendorf this year. But Kirchbichl also a good suggestion above. Close to Munich you could also look at Zell am See or Saalbach-Hinterglimm.

Not very keen on Garmisch myself......Austria is nicer than Germany for skiing.

The Karwendel mountain from Mittenwald looks great, was there in Summer walking & the access from the Karwendel cable car at the top of the mountain to the ski region is through a 1k access tunnel in the mountain. Worth a look if travelling from Munich about 1.5hr on the train. Mittenwald is a beautiful old town with the best beer in Germany IMO.
The train line continues along the valley into Austria, Seefeld is about twenty minutes from Mittenwald.
Wish I lived in Munich!
