Thinking of trying St Johann in mid March but we would be flying out on 17 March and that very much looks like the absolute end of their season. Has anybody been there at this time of year? Many thanks, still getting my ski legs and would hate to waste a week.

I think like the other near by areas (SkiWelt, Kitzbuhel, ect) St Johan closes around mid April. Mid March should be fine St Johan tops out around 1700m from memory and the like of Kitz, Soll etc are more around 2000m. With the season we've had so far it's hard to tell how things will be come March-you should have something to ski on but it is relatively low however March is usually the best time to ski in Austria IMO and at the end of the day these places wouldn't be viable if they couldn't provide a reasonably long season. Worst case scenario the home runs will be kept open with snow cannons.

It's a nice area and will suit you if you're a beginner, there are several resorts that you can easily reach by bus too.

With this season's snow so far you should be fine - there is the area called the Steinplatte at Waidring which is a big high snow bowl and fab!! Plenty of resorts to use on your lift pass. I have been to that area twice the first week of March a few years ago - they look after the slopes well. You have a nice range of skiing and towns and villages. Enjoy!
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

Oh dear, I'm now torn between St Johann and Soll. They both look relatively similar, although perhaps Soll might have more lively apres ski.

If only I could make that decision for you....!

Have you been to Soll? We do want lively but not tacky, if you know what I mean??

Not skied there but have been through many times en route to other resorts and - pardon me if I am speaking out of turn - it just seems like a Benidorm type of place - the Brits have taken over!! People may well correct me but it does appear to be a non-traditional stag party or large groups on the lash type of town. We did go to a Tyrolean evening there once, which was hilarious, but not a typical Austrian Tyrolean evening!
