Glenshee is 'UK’s Best Ski Resort'

Glenshee is the UK's best ski resort, according to a new study by Blacks Outdoors.

The study looked at factors such as the total length of slopes, the annual opening days and the cost of an adult day pass to create a 'Ski Resort Score'.

Vail Resorts Buying Crans-Montana

Vail Resorts, the world's largest ski resorts operator, have confirmed that they're buying Crans-Montana ski area in Switzerland, the company's second Swiss resort.

Crans Montana is one of Switzerland's larger ski areas and future host of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027. It's located two and a half hours away from Vail's other owned and operated European resort in Andermatt-Sedrun.

Heavy Snowfall Brings Higher Avalanche Danger in the Alps

The snowy end to November in the Alps has brought some very enticing scenes to skiers and boarders, but those thinking of heading off piste this early in the season are asked to be aware that avalanche danger levels are currently widely at Level 3 or "considerable" on the scale to 5, with some resorts in Switzerland, including the Jungfrau region, seeing Level 4 or "high".

More European Ski Areas Decide to Open Early

More ski areas in the Alps and Dolomites have announced they'll be opening ahead of schedule, this coming weekend.

Italy's Val Gardena (pictured above this week) and Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil region both say they'll have pre-openings of limited terrain from Saturday.

Heavy Snowfall to Low-Levels in Austria

Austria's promising start to the 23-24 season continues with heavy snowfall reported down to low-levels through the weekend, and more forecast.

Although it's mostly high altitude and glacier ski areas open in Austria so far, ski areas with slopes down below 1,000m altitude have been reporting up to a foot (30cm) of snowfall down to village level ahead of the season start.

Mikaela Shiffrin Wins 90th World Cup

The remarkable American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin has taken an unprecedented 90th World Cup win.

Competing in the slalom race on home snow in Killington, Vermont, a race she has won five times previously, the 28 year old was leading by nine hundredths of a second after the first run.

New Avo-Karts in Morzine-Avoriaz

Morzine-Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil region has a new snow-fun attraction for thrill-seekers this winter, the 'Avo-Kart'.

"The Avo Kart is a three-wheeled vehicle, equipped with hydraulic brakes and designed with a low centre of gravity for excellent road handling," a statement from The resort explains.

Pyrenees Ski Season Starting Early, Tomorrow

The ski season in the Pyrenees is expected to get started a week earlier than expected, with Spain's largest ski area Baqueira Beret announcing that they're opening some runs from Saturday 25th November, following snowfall this week. It's not yet clear if any other centres in the region will join Baqueira.

Ischgl Opening With Most Terrain In World For 23-24 So Far

Ischgl opens for its 23-24 season on Thursday 23rd November with 112km of slopes open from day one.

It means it jumps to the top of the table for terrain open so far, overtaking fellow Tirol ski areas and Otztal neighbours Solden, which as reached 100km of slopes open and Obergurgl with 70km of slopes.

More Details of Saudi Arabian Ski Area Emerge

Saudi Arabia's first outdoor ski resort has been intriguing ski resort planners since it was first announced a few years ago.

The ski area, known as Trojena, is part of the $500bn 'carbon neutral' Neom mega-city project, which is now unveiling a growing number of western companies as lined up to be a part of it. Trojena has already been granted host status for a revamped Asian Winter Games in 2029 before construction has begun.

Planning Application approved for new Edinburgh Snow Centre

[b]The planning application to demolish the existing facilities at the Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend, Edinburgh has been approved by the local authority.

The new two-storey facility will be called 'Destination Hillend' and will be set 'sensitively' into the hillside to match the local surrounding hills.

US Resorts Race To Open For Thanksgiving

US and many larger Canadian resorts are battling nature to open intime for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend, for most in the US a bigger event than Christmas.

After promising cold weather in October, the first half of November was largely warmer and drier than ski areas would have liked with little natural snowfall and temperatures too warm for snowmaking at times.

Improved Cross-Border Connection With New Milky Way Lift

French 23-24 Season Underway “Early”

Two French ski resorts have opened, marking the start of the French 23-24 ski season.

Tignes (pictured above earlier this month) and Val Thorens have both opened almost a week earlier than planned having both received more than a metre of snowfall in the first half of November.

15 Swiss Resorts Open This Weekend

Switzerland looks set to overtake Austria and have the most ski centres open in Europe this weekend. Only the US has more areas open.

Currently only three Swiss centres are open daily, but half-a-dozen have been opening for weekends in November and that number is set to grow by another half-a-dozen from November 18th.

Lecht Upgrades As Cairngorm Funicular Out of Action Again

Scotland's ski season is fast approaching with snow reported above 800m altitude above Aviemore this week.

There's good news and less good from Highland slopes with The Lecht investing to upgrade facilities and simultaneously cut its CO2 emissions, but Cairngorm Mountain unfortunately having issues once again with is key funicular railway, which is out-of-action once again …although its hoped it may be running again by the start of the season.

New Indoor Superpipe in China tested by foreigners for first time

China's groundbreaking first indoor 'super' half pipe has been tested by members of the Burton snowboard team for the first time.

It is based in the Chongli district of Beijing, where many of the skiing events were held during the 2023 Winter Olympics.

Third Italian Resort Opening Early

Livigno is the latest Italian ski area to announce it will open earlier than planned, this coming weekend, on Saturday18th November. That's a fortnight ahead of its planned date of the 2nd December.

It joins Madonna di Campiglio and the Presena Glacier which also plan to start their seasons early, this weekend, thanks to all the early November snowfall. Livigno has had over a metre of snow on its highest slopes, posting separate powder alarms for 50cm and 45cm of snowfall in two 24 hour periods over the past few weeks.

Men’s World Cup Downhill Speed Opening Cancelled for Second Year

The second attempt to open the Men's World Cup Speed Racing season on an all new course that crosses the Swiss-Italian border between Zermatt and Cervinia has been cancelled again.

Last year, the first attempt, the cancellation was due to too little snow on the lower part of the course. This year snow storage facilities had been put in place to ensure there was no repeat of that but the races have been cancelled due too to much snowfall, along with strong winds.

Val Thorens Opening Early With €20 Lift Tickets

[b]Val Thorens have just announced they're joining Tignes in opening a week early, both resorts saying they'll open a week on Saturday, 18th November, instead of the 25th originally planned.

The decision follows more than a week of cold, snowy weather which has seen some areas report more than a metre of snowfall above 3000m altitude, with more of the same forecast for the week ahead too.

Amount of Open Terrain in The Alps Set To Jump This Weekend

The amount of terrain available at already open ski areas in the Alps is set to jump for some this weekend.

Although more than a dozen glacier ski areas have already opened for their 23-24 seasons, mostly in Austria and Switzerland, the majority have only 5-10km of slopes open so far.

Tignes Announces Early 'Pre-Opening'

[b]Tignes has announced it will open a week earlier than planned in what they are calling a "pre-opening" from 18th November - a week on Saturday.

"Following the huge snowfall (more than a metre fell on our peaks), we have decided to open a part of the ski area from Saturday November 18th," a social media post from the resort announces.

A number of Italian ski areas say they'll be opening earlier than planned thanks to the recent heavy snowfalls.

Madonna di Campiglio report that they've had 40cm of snowfall and as a result plan to open their Grosté slopes on Saturday 18 November, all being well, rather than the planned 25th.

London Snow Show Confirmed for 2024, Birmingham Cancelled

It has been confirmed that there will be a second London Snow show next winter, although the organisers of both it and the Birmingham Show announced that the NEC event wouldn't run again in 2024.

The second staging on the new London Snow Show will take place at ExCel on the 19-20 October 2024.

Man Moves Indoors to Keep Up Record of Monthly Skiing for 41 Years

An American man who has managed to ski at least once every month for 41 years decided to ski indoors in September and October to keep his achievement going.

74 year old Gordon Garlock who lives in Portland, Oregon, travelled from the US West to east coasts in order to ski at the only indoor snow centre in North America, Big SNOW in New Jersey.

Heavy Snowfall Reaches Valley Floors in the Alps

It's been snowing ever more heavily at altitude and the snowline has moved down to the valley floor for the first time in many parts of the Alps.

The biggest accumulation yet reported is 60cm (2 feet) in 36 hours on the Stubai glacier near Innsbruck, but many others have reported 30-50cm above 2,500m on ski slopes in France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

First US East Coast Resort Opening For 23-24

The first ski area to open on the US East Coast is also the largest in the region. Killington Vermont says it will open today, Friday 3rd November to pass holders and from tomorrow, Friday 4th November, for everyone else.

The resort posted images of a snowless maintop just five days ago but then said snowmaking began on Halloween when there was also some natural snowfall as temperatures dropped. It also says this weekend is their earliest opening in four years.

Canada’s 23-24 Season Starts Today

Canada's 23-24 ski season is expected to get underway later today, Thursday, 2nd November.

The first Canadian centre that had named a target opening date, months ago, was Banff's local ski hill of Mt Norquay, aiming for Saturday 4th November. That was the earliest target opening date in North America, although four US resorts are now already open.

More Resorts Opening in the Alps After Fresh Snowfall

More glacier ski areas in the Alps have announced they'll open in the next few days after heavy snowfall to start this week, particularly on high slopes above around 2,500m. Several have reported as much as 30cm of fresh snowfall, one 50cm.

It remains a mixed picture though with several other centres announcing they'' delay their opening because they still don't have enough snow, despite the latest falls, because of the largely warm and dry first half of autumn.
