Winter arrives, Lac des Vaux, Verbier, Switzerland...

November is usually a make-or-break month for the start of the season and also when resorts start to open in most of the northern hemisphere's ski nations.

'Speed Opening' organisers in Zermatt accused of illegally digging on glacier

Zermatt and Cervinia have been accused of illegally digging on the Théodule glacier in the build up to the 'Speed Opening' downhill races in November.

The first Alpine Ski World Cup downhill races are scheduled for consecutive weekends on 11/12 and 18/19 November 2023. They will be the first cross-border races in the World Cup's history as they will start from the Zermatt ski area in Switzerland and finish in the Cervinia ski area in Italy.

Another US & First Canadian Ski Area Opening for 23-24 This Week

Following Arapahoe Basin's opening on Sunday, up to 17" (42cm) of natural snowfall in Colorado and consistent cold temperatures for snowmaking, a second of the state's ski areas, Keystone has announced it will also be opening imminently – from 9am tomorrow, Wednesday November 1st.

North American 23-24 Ski Season Starting Sunday

Arapahoe Basin ski area in Colorado has announced that it will open for its 23-24 season on Sunday, 29th October and will most likely be the first area to 'properly open' in North America.

Arapahoe Basin will open for the season, Sunday, October 29 at 8:30 AM with Black Mountain Express and the High Noon trail.

Eurosport & Discovery+ To Cover 600 Winter Sports Competitions From This Weekend

Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe (WBD) has announced that it will cover 600 winter sports races live and deliver 1,100 hours of coverage across 11 sports covered by four federations this winter.

The company runs discovery+ and also owns Eurosport, which is now in its 35th year of providing comprehensive coverage.

Ski By The Hour

Val d'Isère is selling a 4-hour lift pass this winter, which, unlike the traditional morning or afternoon pass, can be skied any four hours.

"This new pass has been introduced in response to the ever-growing demand from customers, who are adopting a more "hybrid" style of skiing holiday that combines time on the slopes with other activities," a resort spokesperson said.

Heavier Canadian Snowfall as Season Start Nears

On and off snow showers in the Canadian Rockies have intensified in the past 24 hours with the first announced season start date now only 10 days away.

Mt Norquay near Banff announced it had had 18cm (7 inches) of snowfall over the past 24 hours. The Albertan ski area has a target 23-24 season opening day of Saturday, 4 November, six days before its Banff neighbours Lake Louise and Sunshine.

Snowfall in the Alps and Pyrenees

Temperatures dropped in the Alps about 10 days ago, ending a month and half of predominantly above average temperatures up to mid-October. It remained mostly dry though with just the odd snow flurry up high. Now though things are starting to look more wintery with more measurable snow at higher elevations, such as on Glacier 3000 at Gstaad, pictured top.

Sweden's 23-24 Season Underway

Sweden's 23-24 ski season is underway with the northerly centre of Kåbdalis opening.

It's the fourth Scandinavian ski area to open for the new season joining Levi and Ruka in Finland, which opened a fortnight ago, and the Galdhopiggen glacier in Norway which has been open since last May with its 2023 season due to end in early November.

New Flight Route to the Dolomites

A new air service between London Stansted and the small Italian city of Bolzano, right next to the Dolomites, launches this winter.

Run by the Bolzano-based airline SkyAlps which uses smaller, 74-seat, turbo-prop airliners that generate about half the CO2 of conventional planes, the company says, the new service will make getting to some of Europe's most stunning areas like Alta Badia and Val Gardena much quicker and easier.

Final Weekend of Southern Hemisphere’s 2023 Season

The last three ski areas still open for the 2023 ski season in the southern hemisphere are coming up to their final weekend.

New Zealand's Turoa and Whakapapa ski areas on Mt Ruapehu on the north Island had always aimed to stay open to this weekend but Argentina's Catedral near the ski town of Bariloche (pictured above) has kept extending its season, despite temperatures reaching +15C on higher slopes in recent days.

Baqueira Beret Adds 3 Runs To Its 170km Terrain Total

Spain's Baqueira Beret has added three new runs which it says takes its toral amount of terrain to 170km, when you include its three off-piste routes.

The new season also sees Spain's largest ski area investing in improved digitalization, more snow making, the new La Choza cafeteria and a remodelled Montarto Hotel.

Winter Park’s New Lift & Staff Housing

Wild Spur Express, a new 6-passenger, high-speed detachable Leitner-Poma lift that can move 2,800 people up the mountain per hour, will give guests a new way to experience Vasquez Ridge terrain when it opens above Winter Park in Colorado (pictured above after weekend snowfall) late next month or early December.

Proposed Welsh Indoor Snow Slope “Beacon of Hope and Opportunity'

A long planned indoor snow centre in Wales, which would be more than twice as long as any of the five existing centres in England, has won praise from local politicians in the region where its due to be built.

Fresh Snowfall in the Alps

Snow has begun falling above about 2,000m in the Alps.

Several ski areas in Austria, including Schladming and Obertauern pictured above, have posted images and reported light snowfall on their higher slopes.

Light snowfall is expected across the Alps over the coming days with the potential for heavier falls later in the week if longer term forecasts prove correct.

Iceland Resort Grooms Slope for Keen Skiers

Although the Alps are waiting on a good snowfall right now (falling temperatures in the past few days have increased the chance of that), ski slopes in northern Europe have been turning white with snowfall reported in Finland, Norway, Scotland and Sweden.

More Glacier Resorts Open in The Alps as Temps Drop

The long awaited fall in temperatures in the Alps appears to be starting to happen at last.

Temperatures are expected t be below freezing day and night above about 2,500m in the Alps and drop to single figures much of the time in Alpine Valleys too. Some light snowfalls are expected on high slopes and glaciers through the coming week.

Plymouth Dry Slope Resurfaced

Plymouth dry ski slope has received a whole new main slope surface with the MK Enterprises team laying 1,300 Diamond mats from John Nike Leisure, the same company that operates the centre.

The centre's four small slopes to the left of the main run will continue to have a Perma-Snow surface

First Heavy Snowfall of 23-24 Build-Up for Western USA

Ski resorts across Western North America have been reporting fresh snowfall in the last 24 hours and more is forecast.

The biggest accumulations appear to be in Washington State and Oregon so far, where Mt Bachelor (pictured) reported 6" of snowfall yesterday and temperatures around freezing.

Mürren Uses Snow Farming To Guarantee November Opening

Switzerland's car-free village of Mürren is the highest ski resort in the Bernese Oberland at 1650m, but it's taking no chance with early season snow cover and using the same technique as Finland's Levi and Ruka among others to ensure they have at least some snow from day one of winter: snow farming.

October Snowfall & Snowmaking in Northeastern America

The first measurable snowfall has been reported in Northeastern North America as Arctic Air has moved south into Eastern Canada and the USA.

Quebec's largest ski area, Mont Tremblant, posted pictures of the first pre-season snowfall of 23-24 there while in New York state Whiteface Mountain reported some snowfall and heavy frost as temperatures dipped below freezing there too.

Ski Area Sets World Record For “Most Denim Worn On Slopes”

The Remarkables ski area in New Zealand says it set a world record for the amount of people skiing and boarding dressed in denim on its closing day on Monday.

Having invited skiers and boarders to, "connect with your inner Jerry and slap on as much denim as you can for a fun final day on the slopes," The Remarkables reported that after staging their first-ever "Denim Dash" they "broke a world record for amount of shredders in denim!"

Half of Open Ski Areas are in Tirol

A third Austrian glacier ski area, Kaunertal, opened for its 23-24 season on Saturday (above).

Like the other two Austrian areas already open, Hintertux and Pitztal, it's in the province of Tirol.

With only six ski areas open in the Alps at present, it means that half of those currently operating are in the famous Austrian ski region.

Lapland's 23-24 Ski Season Gets Started

Two of Finland's biggest ski resorts have got their 23-24 season underway today.

Levi and Ruka both used snow they had stockpiled from last winter, under cover through the summer, then spread back out on the slopes to create several kilometres of runs each.

Les 2 Alpes Cancel October Skiing Plan

Les 2 Alpes (pictured above in better times for snow cover) has announced that it won't be opening for skiing and snowboarding in a fortnight's time as hoped.

The decision was made after Europe posted its warmest September on record, with temperatures well above freezing most days on glaciers in the Alps, and not getting back below freezing on many nights either.

Snow For Closed Aussie Slopes

Australia's ski season ended early in late September after months of above average temperatures melted the snow cover despite the efforts of snowmakers in overnight cold spells and grooming teams.

However there's been fresh snowfall turning slopes white again, which would not be unusual in a normal season when the major resorts like Falls Creek and Thredbo can extend their seasons a week or two into October if conditions are good.

First Turns of 23-24 in the USA

Two US ski areas have reported ski tracks from the first descents of Fall 2023 as the race commence to be the first North American ski area to open for 23-24.

Tracks were spotted at Mammoth Mountain on Monday (above), where a thin cover of fresh snow was lying on snow left from the 22-23 season, which only ended there less than two months ago.

It's all to promote the upcoming London Snow Show at the ExCeL on 21-22 October, the capital's first ski show since 2019 and this time from a different company to the old one.

A new artificial ski slope development in Romania's Gorj County is due to open at the end of October.

Building the Aprilia Park complex's ski hill has involved the moving of tens of thousands of cubic metres of excavated soil in a year-long construction project, the developers say.

First Pre-Season Snowfalls in California

Snowfall has been reported around the Lake Tahoe region for the first time for several ski areas as a major stormfront hit the Californian Coast, bringing torrential rain to lower elevations.

It's less than two months since Mammoth Mountain closed after one of its longest ever seasons, running well into August, following huge snowfalls in the state last winter.
