OA - mention of the Rastro brings back memories - way back in the early 1990's it was, shall we say, a lively spot in the evening!

Ralph opened Rastro's in 1984/5 season, I "frequented" the place the next season when I was working there more than was good for me :D

I've been back a couple of times in recent years for lunch and his daughter has always been running it. I haven't reminded her she used to sit on my knee at the bar......

I was planning on filling up on breakfast (already paid for) to save money lol. So suggestions for places to eat would be very welcome.

Is that 16th December?
Where are you staying in Courchevel and will you be looking for a bite to eat on the hill or in resort at lunch time?

I'm staying in Le Praz at 1300, usually depends on cost and mood to be honest on whether I want to take a break and sit down for lunch somewhere on the mountain. My gf is just finishing University and with me being the only out of the two of us in full time work at the moment I think I will be buying most food from the local supermarket lol. But I am always looking for a cheap lunch option somewhere no the slopes. I much prefer eating at places on the slope than heading back into the resort.

OK JB, my thoughts.
Courchevel is as much about where to avoid as where to go. It deserves the reputation as "exclusive", the fur coat brigade are usually out in force - but probably less so early season.
Avoid ...
Restaurants near Altiport.
Panoramique at top of Solaise.
Restaurants at top of Verdons (where cable car goes from) except the take away window on the piste side or the bigger restaurant near the cable car for a warm up drink.
Chalet de Pierres on the green run into Courchevel 1850.
Centre of 1850 - particularly Le Tremplin, I love it, having a crepe and coffee but .... This is the place that advertised plat du jour for 300 euros (in their defense this was for 2 people).

On the hill in Courchevel which are by no means cheap as chips but much better value ....
Chenus self service (on the Chenus, surprise surprise), also has take away cabin for crepes and hot dogs etc. and just round the corner on same hill La Soucoupe.
Above 1650 either La Casserole or Belle Air
Should you want a "celebration" meal one lunchtime then I would recommend Belle Air (do book) as the best of the mid priced options where you will have superb food and be really looked after.
Also the great big place at the top of the bubble from La Tania that I cannot remember the name of is not too horiffic in terms of price - never had anything but a drink their myself.

Top Tip !!!!
Do not judge a place by outward appearance as "rustic charm" (read tatty) can hide an exclusive eaterie and bill. Do check what you are letting yourself in for before ordering.
To me the difference in Courchevel is the range of restaurants, and prices, rather than all being top end.

Enjoy ....... :D

Wow Andy this is great advice, some really detailed tips here, thanks. I'm just hope that the snow picks up and we spend more time on the slopes than in the bar and resturants. Found out an interesting fact the other day that Courchevel 1850 has the most michelin starred resturants in France outside of Paris. Juat shows how exclusive it really is. I was told that the further down the mountain you come the more you get for your money, hence I'm staying at 1300 :-)

The restaurant nearest the Altiport is worth a quick stop just to view the prices on the menu.
Last time I was there the cheapest item was a plain omelette for 28 euros. The wine list started at 49 euros a bottle.

Is the Bistro du Praz still going? Long, long, long lunches followed by taxi rides home used to be had there!

There also used to be an excellent restaurant for evening meals in the village just below 1300. Can't remember the name I'm afraid.
