So in your opinion do you think they will open on 10th december in any way ? and being selfish if not be open in some way on 17th decenber ??? if so little has fell will they use snow cannons ??? im seriously considering cancelling my flights and moving the hotel booking to next year. we will still loose a lot of money though. last thing i want to do is fly out there for nothing. and by.nothing i mean no skiing. any advice would be appreciated.
thank you very much. looking this morning seems like there is still small amounts falling as there is now snow down to the village this morning. looking at the forecasts as you say lots can change and it all seems to depend on the next 48hrs as some sites are predicting over 70cm . i very much doubt that will fall but got to stay possitive. in your opinion how much is needed early on ? also after tomorrow there is very little if any forecast would they then start using snow cannons etc on the grand montets ? temp seems to be holding. i just cabt imagine they will want opening day to be christmas day or later. surely the financial impact of that will be huge let alone having all the staff you mention hanging around .

It's the top station of the Grand Montets cable car (they don't open it until January), the steps lead down to the glacier, don't forget to take your good legs! It looks a lot different in winter http://downandout.wordpress.com/2009/04/05/landscape-skiing-the-grand-montets/

I don't think there is any need to think about cancelling just yet, it's only the 5th and you're not due to fly out until the 17th, a lot can and frequently does happen between now and then. Apart from the recent higher than usual temperatures there is nothing abnormal about the start of this season. I've known much worse, in 1989/90 and in 2000/01 it didn't snow until January. Before you even think about cancelling talk to somebody in Chamonix preferably at the lift company, they should be able to tell you what the situation regarding opening is. You might also get some comfort from looking at the snow history http://www.fasttrackski.co.uk/snow-report-history.php?resort_id=36 and bear in mind that the lift company employs nearly 400 people so they don't need much time to get ready for opening.

Just been looking 0n the web cams and seems to be coming down pretty heavy in chamonix right now, One cam in perticular shows the train tracks at around 2000m and its coming thick and fast. just jope it contimues. also just seen the pictures on the tignes thread and it looks awesome there. real deep fresh snow . how far from chamonix is tignes ??? as most of the cams in chamonix are onscured is the tignes weather any kind of indication as to the conditions in chamonix ???? almost stating to feel positive that my new skis and boots might get an airing next weekend after all.

Chillax Matt. Plenty falling, pistes will all be open, just maybe better staying on piste than venturing away from the prepared areas. I'm there myself for the weekend.

Website now says there will be a partial opening on Saturday. (no longer subject to snow conditions)
