:?: Has anyone used the textile socks which fit over the driven wheels? I'm driving to the snow at Christmas and VW say that I'm not allowed to fit chains to my Golf as the tyres fitted are too big.

Any comments would be really helpful.

Thanks. :lol:

There has been many a discussion on here about these. I seem to recall they got a good slating to be honest. Like me, you have a car with non standard wheels, and you cant get snow chains to fit. My Leon has 18 inch alloys and there is no way I can get snow chains for them, which means I cant risk driving to the slopes.

Search through some old threads on here, and you should find some advice.

The Auto Socks are not recognised as chains by the police in France. So if you are in a chainage area, then you won't be allowed to proceed. The European Motoring Associations think they are pants too, after testing them (as well as being socks)
)

There is supposed to be a new tyre chain on sale this winter specially for low profile tyres/rims. Try a google search.

Thanks for the advice, looks like I'll have to try something like a Spikes Spider, I was hoping to avoid this as they cost £240+, a bit rich for sitting in the boot looking pretty! Driven three times now (in different cars, Disco 1 twice, great for long distance but a bit thirsty, Merc C220 once, fantastic car) and never got the chains out of the boot before. Still, a big risk going without them I suppose.

The wheels on the Golf are standard, 225/45 R17 but VW only state chains on 205 section tyres, perhaps I'll have to nick some off one of the other guys estates! :wink:

When I said standard, I meant non EU wheels. Its common in the UK for cars to be fitted with upgraded or different wheels to the standard in the EU, which creats the problem with fitting snowchains. Whilst, like mine, I am sure your wheels came with the car, they are non standard wheels as far as snow chains are concenred.
Bummer, innit?

Oh Yes, the GT badge on the back looks great but a pain in the ass when you want to drive on the snow. Still the wheels off the Merc might fit, or I'll just have to take that one instead.

Choices, choices!

Thanks again.
