For anyone just about to go to Mayrhofen, let me give you an update on the conditions.

Firstly, we arrived on Sat 12th, early evening, and thuye flight in to Innsbruck was "hairy" to say the least, low cloud, high wind, zero visibility, heavy rain, but we knew that up on the mountains, the rain would be snow and doing its duty.......and sure enough Sunday morning, first lift up the Ahorn at 8.30 and it was heaven. White everywhere, freshly groomed powder, the sun poking through, and about minus 4 so not too cold.

We had 3 brilliant days skiing, before it turned windy on the Wednesday, and the slopes became quite icy and slightly bare in patches. Conditions on some slopes were extremely challenging. However, the snow God did his job overnight, and Thursday morning saw another huge dump of snow, and in fact it snowed until mid afternoon. The light was poor, but the snow was amazing. The bashers had been beaten by the weather, and we were shin deep in fresh snow until around 11am in most places, making it challenging in a different and more exciting way.

Sure enough, Friday morning and the slopes were as good as my mate can remember them being, and he has been there for 30 seasons.

There was more snow the night we left, and the temp is set to drop next week, so dont fear if you think its not going to be much good, it was absolutely perfect and hugely enjoyable.

Enjoy.

Just to clarify that point , the conditions on the shady side of the Penken (Horberg) have not been as good as that since I first went to Mayrhofen 30 years ago (during my visits of course!.) There are usually some icy patches, but last friday was absolutely perfect, with lovely fresh snow that had been worked a little and was "quiet" to ski on.

Roll on next time....
