Hello Forum,
I'll be travelling down to Italy in December. We normally do a couple of days in Chiesa (Valmalenco) and a couple of days in Madesimo. However, given that this year 28-29 December fall on a weekend (they're the days we'd normally spend in Chiesa), I fear that the resort may be super full. Also, they often close a run (or two) for skiclubs so I was thinking to maybe stop somewhere en route. Andermatt is just before the St Gothard tunnel and it's definitely a possiblity. It seems quite a nice resort, but it's probably going to be rather expensive.
I saw that Meiringen is a bit up the road and was wondering if anybody has been there and what's it like. I am not interested in apres-ski, we're just looking for somewhere nice, not too busy (as quiet as it can be, given the time of the year) to spend a couple of days. (On piste only).
thank you all
Meiringen

Had a great trip to Andermatt last spring. Lots of terrain with new / fast lifts and good views all the way to Sedrun (and beyond now with new link this year even further down valley). Plus you can ski as far east as you can during the day and get the panoramic apres ski train back on the lift pass. Also got the Gem area to go at for good pistes and excellent off piste/itineraries. The quaint town has some nice bars/ food places and I didn't find it too pricey. Note that lift passes are flex priced so if you book early they can be cheaper (often super cheap for a Wed - as low as 10chuffs). Would deff go back. They've invested loads in infrastructure and it's very visitor oriented (small eg but free mountain spring water in all restaurants). There is plenty to go at for a weekend (twice Meiringen size) and it was pretty quiet when I was there, especially as the capacity of uplift is so good for a lesser known resort. Also easy to visit other resorts nearby as you'll have a car and it's bang on good road links (eg I did a day in Engelberg on way home). As you can tell I am a fan :-)

Meiringen is a lovely little spot...for a few quiet days.
Nothing but bars at night and the main lift was a walk from the centre but once on the lifts upto a central hub, the lifts fan out quite nicely.
I had nice snow with top ups so the whole area was skiable. I always thought it worth a revisit if you tagged it onto a road trip.
Andermatt is also good but has changed massively these last few years. If you get guidance then you'll get off the beaten track.
Ditto Engelberg.

Remember in the winter you may have to head to the A2 via Stans and the Brunig Pass as the high passes such as the Furka, Grimsel and Susten may well be closed
