You are right to be cautious Adele, but this stresses the importance of paying for flights with a credit card, not a debit card. Adds about £4 to £8 per ticket, but good insurance.

Alitalia, for fear of stating the obvious, or are we talking UK based airlines only?

Thomas Cook and Mytravel merged recently, so I dont know whats happened to all their planes, but I cant imagine they are all still in their own use.

It has been suggested that BMI are another, because of their long haul services, but I would only be guessing at any others.

Yes Tony UK based But i`m sure he mentioned that Bmi were ok as well as Easyjet and the obvious BA. It would be good to know if anyone else comes up with any info though.

If thats the case, I would be looking hard at Monarch.

I also reas that Skyeurope are on the verge of going under, which would mean and end to flights for Zakopane and Jasna, not good news for our friend at chaletslovakia

i remember reading a few weeks ago that IATA had about 40 airlines (worldwide) on a financial watch.

As someone mentioned above, always use a credit card to buy tickets / holidays / whatever, or get some good travel / holiday insurance.

Late booking may not be as easy this winter. If airlines do go under, then capacity will be reduced. I think the XL group had about 40 planes. I havnt looked at the accounts, but would guess that they were leased. I dont see other companies taking up the leases in the current climate (even if their banks let them !), so that is a lot of seats taken off the market.

wrt Alitalia, if that goes under, then thats another large chuck of seats out of the market in Europe, and i am fairly certain that their alliance partners will be liable to fly the people who have already booked with Alitalia and dont have insurance - maybe not that direct a route and not neccesarily on the day they booked.

Eurostar / Eurotunnel will not be able to take up the capacity as it looks likely they will have to run at reduced schedule/capacity due to the fire. last time it took 6 months to carry out repairs to the tunnel.

On the plus side, since less people will be able to get to the resorts, lift queues will be reduced, there could be some real bargains on the appartments / hotel side...
and maybe the price of beer might even come down !

possibly but early industry figures are showing an increase in European booking at the expense of UK bookings so that may not play out. It's all crystal (boom boom) ball gazing at this stage though.
