Hi there
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice....
I'm planning a weekend away skiing (aiming for 3-4 days on the slopes), and after a little bit of research, the first resort which keeps coming up is Chamonix. However, I have a couple of concerns!
To give a bit of background.....I am taking the boyfriend away for his birthday at the end of Feb as a surprise. I am an intermediate who is not very confident, whereas he is more of an expert who loves anything steep or off piste! Initially Chamonix sounded great, plenty of short stay hotel availability, close to Geneva (flights are already booked, will most likely be hiring a car), awesome off piste (family are chipping in for an off piste guide for him for a day) and plenty of bars/restaurants, but I am concerned by how spread out the ski areas are and so not very convenient when we want to make the most of our time there, and then I keep reading everywhere that it is best for experts, scaring me slightly!
Can anyone who has been give any advice? Or recommend any other resorts which might tick the boxes?
Big thank you :)

Cham has pretty much of everything, from easy thru extreme, it's just very spread out across the valley and the different ski areas. So if you want intermediate, and he wants expert/off piste, there both there, just not in the same place. But that will be pretty much any resort. Sorry to say, but two different skiing styles most likely will mean heading separate ways (at least for a day or two) in the morning and meeting up again for apres to tell stories off the days events over a few adult beverages, lol. Kick his butt out of the car in front of Compagnie des Guides in the morning and you head off to La Tour, Brevant or Les Houches or whatever suits your style for a day of casual. Then maybe a day together on Grand Monets once you've got a little more confidence and his legs are cooked out from playing with the big boys. Not to mention what weather conditions will play into it.
Whatever, don't take it to serious, have fun, it's a vacation.

If you're only going for a few days why not think about a ski-in ski-out destination like Avoriaz and save loads of time catching buses and cable cars to get on the slopes. Alternatively look at Le Grand Bornand or La Clusaz both having plenty of mileage and varied terrain which should keep both of you entertained for a few days. La Clusaz has a choice of hotel accommodation in the town centre so you can walk to bars and restaurants and the lifts.I'd recommend Alpen Roc where you might get a deal but there are others.
Not too far from Chamonix try Saint Gervais with direct access via cable car onto the slopes and linking into Megeve. There's some great intermediate skiing and off-piste opportunities here.
Wherever you go have a great time!

If you are both at a different level then forget Chamonix.
Morzine and Lez Carroz are both great for a short break and have plenty for both of you to ski. I prefer Morzine as its a nice town and the skiing in Avoiraz is excellent too.

When in doubt?....Flat out.
