Thanks for the excellent write-up. The Sud-Tirol is a great part of the world. Some piccies would realy top it off..

Bansko huge dump of Snow

I don't want to get all negative about Bansko, but does 6 inches in two days constitute a "huge dump"? Val Gardena had 40cm (= approx 16 inches I think) in 8 hours overnight when I was there around Christmas time. Anyway, I am glad to see the snow has arrived there and there is plenty more on the way.
That last piccie looks fantastic. Are they big on Krispy Kreme over there?

I have to be honest and say its a place, along with Courchevel, that I have deliberately avoided because of the reputation of rip off prices and the rah rah brigade.

Rightly or wrongly; on the advice of friends, I have avoided Meribel as well. They tell me it is full pretentious plonkers and is over-priced. I hope to find out for myself one day whether the stories are true.

I was there late December. Stayed in Ortisei. Wrote a report here;

Had such a blast we going back to the Dolomites (Alta Pusteria) in 3 weeks - not that i am counting. I have been crying watching the webcams this week. Perfect blue ski and regular overnight snow - looks absolutely perfect and I am 1000kms away. Of course the 6th of March is a long way off so I suppose the snow might melt if they get a hot spell but at this stage you would have to think it should hang in there until March. I don't know - the more experienced ppl here should be able to advise.

From what I gather and saw, their "snow management" (I might have invented a new term there) is top-class. Snow cannons liberally used when we where there even though they already had heaps of snow, and piste preparation was simply outstanding.

Overall, I'd say that the odds this year are OK it will hold up until March. Where are you staying?

I am definitely going to get to Madonna this time. I can't wait, positively salivating already I am. Any tips?
Best way to get to Alta Badia?

Igor

You shouldn't need them. I was there around XMAS and despite the massive dumps we had, they did a top job of keeping the MAIN roads (i.e residential streets etc) clear. If you have a back road going to some distant chalet then the odds are that it won't be cleared.

Of course, having chains and knowing how to them on are different things. Fitting them in the dark in -5c is even more different.

Looks pretty good to me

I think someone else mentioned this recently but don't neglect screen wash, you need loads of it and down to the lowest temperature you can get. I've gone through liters of the stuff in the last two days alone.:roll:

Yep, got caught with frozen windscreen fluid on the through Germany a few weeks back cuz I didn't have the anti-freeze screen wash. -17c, salt and spray everywhere. Very unpleasant and dangerous. The bandit German service stations were selling 5 litre of -20 at 22EU a bottle. About 5 times normal retail price but there were still queues going out the door.
