Where to Ski in Austria

Niederau is very cheap, as is Soll. But ask yourself why? Look at the height of both resorts - they often struggle for snow, and you may find yourself spending lots of time travelling your ski pass area to find some.

Ok, that really is a load of old rot!! Both Soll and Niederau have averaged snow depths for January of over 100cm over the last 5 years!!

And before anyone tries shooting me down about last year I think you'll find that the snow was crap all over, not just the "lower" resorts.

As it's been said on this forum many a time before, the higher you go the more snow is required to cover the rocks that are generally found on the pists at that height, whereas the "lower" pistes are most;y pasture and therfore need not as much snow cover ot be skiable.

The sorry truth is that with metronomic consistency global warming means that to gaurantee snow in the coming years you are best off choosing a resort with a glacier nearby or leaving it as late as possible to find out where the snow is and then book.

I do agree that Mayrhofen is a great resort although it can be a little overbearing if you don't want the 'in your face' routine. It would be very worthwhile staying in one of the smaller villages outside of the town such as Lanersbach or Finkenberg, quiet at night but close enough to hop in a cab for a rowdy night out
Hi there, the best advice I could give would be:-

Ellis Brigham
Snow and Rock
your local ski shop

Unless you 100% know what you're doing, and I deduce that by asking this question in the 1st place you're not, then you are better off by far taking yourself and your skis down to one of the above and shilling out a few quid to have it done properly.

You could end up inadvertantly ruining a perfectly decent pair of skis :!:

Many folks prefer shades when it's cold but sunny, but it's possible to damage the eyes with cold wind, so I favour goggles. :D

How does that happen then, I've never heard of this before :?:
Mid April - Where to go folks please?

why don't you try Hintertux, Austria? High enough and the glacier will still be giving excellent skiing at that time of the year, in fact I'd probably go as far as to say that weather permitting you can get a decent tan in the mid to late afternoon and still ski 'til 1400!! For that matter any glacier resort would do
where to go? help please!

Another wise practice is NOT to tighten ski boots on first two runs! Ski down beginner run with an nice easy style with those loose boots! It serves two goals. It allows body to warm up and it allows my brain to "feel" the snow conditions!
You see with loose ski boots, you have to be in "perfect" ski position to "carve" even in the beginner runs! My brain wakes up and takes in all the sensory inputs; hardness of slope, "flow" of base, strength of "tired" muscles, etc....

Once my heart has pumped some oxygen to muscles, I have seen the conditions of the runs and I have done my "warm up " runs,,,then I tighten boots and go to other slopes!

I'm definately with you on the warm up thing but I'm not so sure about the loose boots. It happened to me this year, being the cocky little git that I can be sometimes after disembarking from the gondola I proceeded to chuck the skis on and steam down a easy red to get the juices flowing. Imagine my shock when I had to perform a sharp turn to avoid a snow boarder intent on going as fast / faster than me only to find that I'd neglected to tighten the top 2 buckles and strap

Obviously Pavel you are a far more advanced skier than me and I don't mind telling you it was quite possibly the scariest moment of the trip. Needless to say the arm waving that ensued as I tried to avoid carnage was apparently quite hysterical to those behind me and I still get ribbed about it now! It goes without saying then that I shall NEVER be skiing anywhere, not even the garden path without my boots very firmly done up. Horrible feeling :P
