Have you considered the Pyrenees as an alternative to the Alps? The skiing is considerably cheaper, the local people are friendly and there is a real French feel. Bareges-La Mongie (Tourmalet) is the largest resort in the French Pyrenees, with over 100km of piste and skiing for all abilities. The local ski school is fantastic and the Pyrenees are a great place to learn to ski. Stay in Bareges - a traditional mountain village. The night life is a bit quiet, but there are some lively, friendly bars. See www.mountainbug.com for more information and the best chalet-accommodation in the Pyrenees.
The Pyrenees are a great alternative to the Alps, with lift passes, equipment hire and piste restaurants around a third cheaper. The Bareges-La Mongie (Tourmalet) resort is the largest in the French Pyrenees with over 100km of piste. The runs are much quieter and the Pyrenees receive more snow annually than the Alps - great snow, empty pistes, no queues and friendly people. What more could you want?
