New boots

Ski Angels were recommended to me, check out the Ellis Brigham website - they are a gel pack that you put between your shin and boots to stop the friction - shin bite (what a descriptive name!) so will hopefully stop the agony of leaning forward in your boots when your shins are sore!

Now I have my new boots, these are the next thing - I will be on Ski Sunday next (NOT!!!)
I have just had a quick look at this in my lunch hour - priceless, so glad I mentioned it on this forum and for others to have a laugh at too. If I can get my complete video copied, I will let you know, as I will have to buy disks and envelopes and the postage - otherwise petition the BBC to show it again! Otherwise if you can get it via the Snowheads site so be it!

Best laugh ever!!!! I love the characters, the quirky music and the commentary!!
Ha ha! Tino!! There is the Uphill Ski Club of Great Britain for starters..

I have been told by a work colleague that we are getting just such a device so if I can get it copied onto a DVD I can send it down to Bristol for whoever to do lots of copies and the profits to a skiing charity, i.e. above - I am sure you will all agree it will be the best comedy money you will have spent all year!

Glad others remember it - why don't they make similar documentaries?? It came out when we first went skiing and I remember bits of it every year - and there are always characters very very similar who are on the nursery slopes! I must watch it again before I go this year!
I am not that guy (as I am female for a start!) but glad others remember it - it is a classic and the funniest documentary I have ever seen. I have never people laugh so much at footage of people falling off drag lifts, chair lifts and causing mayhem for those coming up/off behind them - you need to watch it with a box of tissues - and for those of you who remember learning to ski, you will feel for 'Kevin' as he struggles in vain as he got off the drag lift too early.

If I can find out where I could get the video copied onto a DVD I will let you know, but for now the tape is a treasured possession!

I wonder where Kevin, Brenda and Maureen are now?? (I did see the two ladies on a daytime TV show, saying they were still skiing!)
Does anyone else on this forum remember seeing On the Piste back in the 1980's - it featured two groups going skiing, there were the Downhill Only Club who went to Wengen in Switzerland (very posh they were too!) and the Thomson package who went to Soll in Austria! There were some real characters in the programme, most notably Kevin - who could not ski to save his life, and two hilarious ladies Brenda and Maureen who discussed their underwear (or lack of) whilst going up on the chair lift. I have this on tape and watch it every year before I go skiing, because it reminds me of why I love the alpine environment so much. I wish the BBC would repeat it, I have never seen friends who don't ski, laugh so much - it is priceless!! Every year I go, I always see a 'Kevin' and remember that I have improved somewhat considerably since I first started!

If I had £1 for every time I have watched this, or loaned it to friends, I could pay for a skiing holiday!!
Random Tips for Beginners

A bar of chocolate solves everything, but do be careful where you put it (if you sit on it, it will be very mis-shapen!). For instance when learning to ski, when the rest of your class can do it and you can't, so it is a comfort (aahh!) and for those sessions when you are the championy of your class and it all comes right - then celebrate and reward yourself! Either way, never ski without a mars bar somewhere on you - and also if you are starving and cannot afford the restaurant prices - at least you can have a hot drink and have something to chomp on!
Beginner resort from Edinburgh

Well this is why forums like these are so good as everyone always helps out and come up with options you may not have considered! Never give up going skiing, persevere because out there is a holiday for you with just a little bit of tweaking - and the internet is SO useful! Have you also thought of using trains from airports to get you to resort? European train travel is far superior than in the UK - RailEurope is the website to use. Last time I went on a DIY trip to Switzerland, I flew into Berne with Flybe, got the minibus from the airport to the train station and then had a super hour's journey to Frutigen (and then to Adelboden where I was staying - and am doing the same this year) so nice, I did not want the train journey to end. If you can fly into Salzburg there are lots of Austrian resorts within easy reach. Remember public transport is exactly that - to be used by the public! Hope this helps (a bit!)
Ski Boots suitable for a high instep

Nope, neither back in the 1990's nor this week can they fit me out with a comfortable boot because of my high instep - hence trying somewhere else and spending the afternoon there, so whilst I appreciate Lockwoods reputation (and it is my local outdoor and ski shop) they do not have the solution to my feet other than paying out £500 for a custom made pair - hence this reiterates the reason for going to Ellis Brigham at the Snowdome and getting far more advice and a better fit from Ryan! They also had far more variety there - hope this helps others who are also having fun and games (and sore feet) from trying on boots.
