I'm not entirely sure I want to pursue that line of thought....

I was on a flight to Geneva a few years ago with a man in his full snowboard gear, including hat & goggles

When I say "with", I mean he was on the same flight as me ONLY....

It's all a question of balance (and not just on your skis/board!)

You need enough stuff to ensure that you stay warm, dry and safe, but you don't need every bit of paraphernalia going until you know whether or not you like it!

Essentials are:

Ski jacket (the pockets thing is excellent advice, particularly if you're not going to take a rucksack up the hill)

Trousers/salos

2-3 pairs of proper ski socks - as Tony H says, not tube ones, they're terrible!

1 or 2 base layers, non cotton. They wash and dry really quickly, I can usually manage with one if there's a radiator!

A decent quality lightweight fleece

A hat or helmet, depending on preference

Goggles or sunglasses. I'd be inclined to say goggles if you don't take both - nowt worse than sunglasses in a snowstorm!

Good quality gloves

Sunscreen for face and lips

Skiing with a wee rucksack is really handy for the extras - water & sunscreen is essential, I always carry a camera too! Also dead handy for carry an extra layer/stripping off an extra layer!

main thing is, don't fret too much. If you did forget something, you'll be able to buy it in resort. This is a test run - you can indulge in all the ski porn once you decide whether or not you like it

My husband thinks he does. Love him...

Can't help you on the men's skis I'm afraid, but I absolutely love my K2 One Luvs. I've had them for 3 years, I'm a comfortable intermediate skier, don't do off piste.

They've coped brilliantly with icy golfballs in Canada, deep powder last week in Chamonix, are fab at speed, and they've also survived Scotland :D

Superb Mr H - making me think long and hard about that one for next year now! Sounds pretty good for an experienced boarder and two intermediate skiers :D

My sunglasses are Oakley Flak Jackets too - and I love them.

Googles are Oakley Stockholmes - they're fab too.
