Ian Wickham wrote:There is just a technique to using them this is what you do.......

1. Carefully drop sallos and any under garments you may be waring

2. Hook your arm through your sallo braces so they do not flap behind you or it could end up messy.

3. Slightly squat at 45 degrees.

4. Remember right arm holding the sallos braces and left arm behind you against the wall or system pipe

5. Now you should be at the correct angle for a successful number two's

6. Mission accomplished

Wickers, you put your heart & soul & a whole lot more into that post. Brilliant.

Have drove to Austria many times from the uk normally choosing to do the north sea ferry crossing from Hull to Rotterdam. The onwards route is normally to head towards Arnheim > Duisburg > Koln > Frankfurt > Wurzburg > Munich > Austria. The route is approx 100km from Rotterdam Europort to the Tirol & takes approx 9.5hrs.
This year because of some unplanned travel changes, we were forced to do the Belgium > Luxemburg > Struggart > Munich > Tirol route & I can confirm that this route is definetly slower. Granted we had terrible weather to contend with but the 1000km journey took an incredible 18hrs.
Is this a record?

Some good advice on here already but for me the question of skiing style is the key to the correct type of ski, if your style is more laid back & you are not "attacking" the mountain then you are going to need a ski with a softer flex that does not require to much effort. So many skis to choose from i.e. piste, all-mountain etc, I would think you need to choose a ski rated for intermediate skier range 3 - 7. The range is based on ability, all of the UKs main skiing retailers use this system to match the ski to the skier.
Should get a real bargain if you hold out for a month or so, good luck.

You're onto a hiding for nothing with this idea, enjoy skiing for what it is, I for one don't want parachutes introduced into a sport in which the risks are already well managed.
Helmets, body armour, back protectors & bobble hats to name a few, adding a parachute to the list is just not on.
Sorry for being so negative.

During Wednesdays Ladies Super Combined race, the race commentor reported that Chemmy is deaf in one ear which affects her balance, If this is true Chemmys results are all the more impressive. I know that the olympics are all about winning medals but for me to see miss Alcott up there as our lone representive in the ladies alpine events is just fantastic.
Well done Chemmy.

Ski Length

I ride all mountain Volkl Vertigo Motions in a 185cm ski length & I am 6"1, general rule of thumb when sizing freeride skis was that the ski should measure upto the brow of the eye. Technology & changes in ski design seam to have changed the above rule & a lot more folk appear to be using shorter length skis, I recently inquired about some new Volkl freeride skis & found the ski best suited was 177cm in length.
I think you would be able to get away with 170 intermediate skis but 177cm ski or similar would better suit your needs.

Stuck at work on backshift with no access to TV. Just have to wait for the highlights later & try and avoid hearing the result.

I hate to say it but skiing so soon after an operation for this type of hernia is a tough ask, personally I wouldn't risk it. Hope it works out for you both.
