Oh well, traditional I shall remain in that case.

You are right Tony, skiing has not become more dangerous. People wear helmets because they can get some degree of protection against injury, helmets are often warmer and more comfortable than hats, and because helmets are now available. In the past helmets were not as well designed and were not easily available. There are dozens of sports where helmets were not worn in the past, but are now the norm. Most of those sports do not have a legal requirement to wear a helmet, but it is often a no brainer (scuse the word play) that head protection is a sensible precaution. While there may be debate on the degree of protection a helmet offers, there is no debate that many minor and some serious injuries are prevented.

It is sad that some people feel threatened by the shift to helmet wearing, but it is a fact (at least in the US) that most serious skiers and snowboarders now wear helmets. I'm sure smokers feel the same way in an increasingly non smoking society; although I have never heard of anyone being harmed by second hand bobble hat wearing

I tell you what is said: people thinking that wearing a helmet makes them better and/or more invinceable than those who don't and also people banging on about why wearing helmets is a no brainer etc etc.
I dont read stats.
I dont pay attention to people who get injured, it can happen crossing the road.
I have a choice, and I choose not to wear a helmet as I dont feel the need to, and I also dont want to look like a nerd, as sorry to those who wear helmets, but the vast majority of you look like you've been let out of the asylum for a day.
Thats my view, different to others I am sure, and Its not a right or wrong one. However, please stop telling me I SHOULD wear a helmet (and thats not aimed at you Bob)

Rant over. Debate over. Ski season starting......

I had a total up of those on the trip last week. There were 66 people, of which I saw less than 10 without a helmet.

I meant to say the no brainer reference was to other sports like mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, climbing etc, where the need for a helmet is considered obvious.

I was quite happy I wore a helmet for the last 2 days. I have been skiing off piste through trees. Well not actually through them, though I did hug one briefly yesterday :D

"Debate over. "

Certainly not because you say it is. The debate will continue because it's a proposition that can't be resolved. As with seatbelts, there are always people who argue for freedom of action while others view it as a risk analysis: For the latter, the decrease in risk at not cost is what drives their decision. Which I think is a reasonable approach to life, even if it's not your own.
