He can give you a report of how it is to ski it at full race speed. He can't wait to do it!!

:D Wow, someone to cheer on. Will you be there as well? I hope he does well.

Far Queue No unfortunately. Have to work to help pay for it all!
Will be at the World Junior champs at Chamonix/Megeve/Les Houches in early Feb to watch him. He's going for a medal in the Super G. Currently No12 in the World Junior rankings for that so in with a good shot.

Wow!! You crazy fool!! I've watched the race at various locations including just by the combined downhill start gate. The jump there is insane. I'm surprised the course was open given that race day isn't too far away. Canadian Corner that follows is a very tight right hander with the camber throwing you down the hill.
Last year, I went up to the slalom start gate and got the heebie geebies just looking down the pitch.

Maybe one day if I keep practising I'll inch my way down it.

Are you going to the race this year?? I was thinking about it but reckon accomodation will be impossible.

No not this year. Have done the last two years but stayed in Grindelwald and got the train up.
It's a great spectacle. Last year, we watched practice from in the main grsndstand and the main downhill race at Canadian Corner. The Saturday night in Wengen is legendary. Plenty of late trains laid on down to Interlaken and back over to Grindelwald.

You are making me very interested indeed, sounds like a great weekend.

I did the Lauberhorn 3 times this morning and managed 6m41s on the third attempt which was the only one I timed.  I was brought to an abrupt standstill twice by ski schools (adults) snaking around just over a brow, and lost my front edge once resulting in a rather undignified slide. Reckon I could do it in under 6m given a good clear run at it. Puts the two and a half minutes the pros do it into perspective  I thought I was flying.

Slow coach. You'd knock off a minute on skis.

They have control gates to go round too- not picking their own route. And they are doing it on 215's with 45m rad - planks really!

I'm a bit confused? We've just come back from Wengen and the Lauberhorn course was very closed, or at least it was on Friday (1/1/10) when we went up there. I asked at the lift office and was told it wouldn't open until after the race. You could ski the bottom end (below the railway bridge) but certainly not the top. Was it open earlier in the week? I thought it would be a novel way to clear my hangover!

Overall, although Wengen is wonderful, the skiing last week was probably the worst I've ever experienced! There is a fair bit of snow but the temperature variations have left the pistes knackered with a mix of ice, bare patches and slush. We also had two days of heavy rain below 2000m. It snowed quite heavily on Friday night and the temperature dropped 10 degrees - we went home on Saturday morning. Bummer.

Just looking into how to get away again in the not too distant future!
