I don't think the town being packed will bother me, the atmosphere should be great. As for the skiing, as long as there are enough pistes to ski i'll be happy...i just hope they don't shut off the Hanankhan lift as its the closest to my hotel!

We were planning on going on the 9th Jan but changed to the 16th for a better hotel, didn't even think about checking for competitions - maybe a lesson learned.

Either way, whatever happens at the resort, the holiday will be great and i can't wait! And i'll be able to see how quick exactly these skiers go down these slopes, its difficult tell on the TV.

have a great time 8)

JamesC You will have a great time, the atmosphere at Kitzbuhel is amazing all weekend. Saturday night is just rammed in town. loads of street bars, food, bands etc and around 40,000 people attend the Downhill and stay!
I went 2 years ago for the weekend spent the night in the casino and then slept in the car.
Also been to the Les Houches World Cup Downhills twice. Again great atmosphere, lots going on.
Would always recommend going to watch a World Cup race

I was planning to go to the Kitzbuhel Downhill then ski 2 days then onto the Schladming night slalom all for my 50th BD, but have decided to go and watch TJ race in his final World junior champs in the Mont Blanc region (Chamonix/Megeve/Les Houches) instead. Hopefully he will get a top 10 or higher to make my birthday a happy one!

Been in Wengen for the last two years for the Lauberhorn. It's a brilliant experience. Practice days are no busier than a normal ski day and you get full access to any of the viewing grandstands. We sat in the finish area to watch. Race day is manic but the atmosphere is amazing and the party afterwards is great fun. Go and enjoy it.

A client of mine has just interviewed Franz Klammer for an article, and they discussed his 1976 olympic win amongst other things, but when Franz was asked what was the scariest race he did he replied without batting an eyelid: "Kitzbuhel"
Why was that, he was asked, to which he responded "Because every time I did it I sh1t my pants."
Brilliant.
