Both of these accidents are very sad.

From what I have read on the net there is nothing to suggest that Ms Richardson's accident/illness actually had anything to do with skiing although I guess it will be proved one way or the other eventually.

Having just come back from Tignes, I'm surprised that there are not more accidents like the one reported in Alp d'Huez.

Every year it seems that more and more skiers spend more time skiing at speeds way in excess of what their ability would warrant.

I came to 3 conclusions last week.

1. I should get a helmet
2. I feel way safer off piste - away from skiers mentioned above.
3. Really wide skis are like a bike with stabilisers, eventually you will reach a standard where you don't need them )

I;m guessing she took a bang to the head, and that's all it takes to cause a haemorrhage. That can happen to anyone, but I think it does make you stop and think of the benefits of wearing a helmet.
As for the poor man who went over the edge in France............OMG what a freak accident that must have been. His poor family must be in total shock. I remember my OH doing something similar many years ago. He went over the edge of a narrow blue slope, He managed to grab on to the top of what looked like a small tree. Turned out the tree was about 15 ft tall and it was a sheer drop below. He was extremely lucky!

Found this report about it

A 43 year old British skier was killed as he skied with his family and friends in Alpe d'Huez yesterday, Sunday, after suffering a fatal fall.

According to local reports, Micheal Howard Probert from St Albans, was at the start of a weeks' holiday when the accident happened during Sunday morning on the lower part of the ski area near Villard-Reculas.

It seems Mr Probert fell into a ditch and hit his head hard on the ground. Rescuers were quick to reach the scene, but the victim had suffered a heart attack and was unable to be revived.

Despite conditions being sunny and with good visability, the PGHM mountain rescue service had a busy day in the Isere area yesterday, with three other rescues for a suspected fracture, a back injury and an rock climbing injury.
