Scotland, a skiing nation with five resorts, does not have a February break! There are two really useful weeks in October. Good political planning!
wow! 12 week break in the usa,I didnt know that! In Canada it is 8 weeks (july and Aug.) but kids do get 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week in march for spring break.
Skiing is so good for kids.Great family sport..just too bad it is so expensive.
He's right.....Went to France Feb half term 2007...
Nightmare...
Not helped by fact snow was very poor., so more people were fighting for less ski area.
Was awful, my husband made me swear that we'd never go at that time again.
Main problem is crowds at that time of year for me.
The price was no more as we did DIY so the hotel would've cost the same at any other peak season week.
In my opinion, if you have to go in school holidays, go at Easter. Same area (Grand Massif) excellent in April every time we've been.
Good snow, warmer and longer days and less queues.
Another thing to consider is that parts of the UK now have fixed spring breaks, others are ruled by when Easter is. So last year as Easter was early lots of schools were going back or into their last week as ours broke up. This was great, we got a great deal on a chalet in the 3 Valleys and it wasn't too busy. Certainly we experienced very few queues.
Different parts of the UK have different length of holidays too.
Here in N. Ireland schools get an 8 week summer break. They get the same number of days overall (I think) as English schools but it's split up differently.
Oh, how the other half live
It is usually a little less than 12 weeks, mid June to late August or early September. The requirement is that children get 180 days of education per year. There is a 4 day weekend at "Thanksgiving" (always on a Thursday) about 2 weeks at Xmas and 1 week for spring break, plus about a half dozen other various 1 day holidays.
I told Trent (my son) I would pull him out of school to go skiing on a few random weekdays (It is SO much less crowded) as long as he stayed on the Honor roll (above 3.25 gpa). Hopefully the ski season last at least another couple months this year, so we can get up at least another 10 times or so.

A little more info for Brad's bennefit...
When politicians here in the US talk about year round school in Europe, they leave out some important facts. Take the UK. It is true that they only get about five weeks summer vacation, but they also get a two or sometimes three week vacation at the end of fall and spring trimesters (Xmas and Easter). And each trimester has a half term break at the midpoint of at least a week. Overall the kids spend very little more time in school than kids do here in the US with their 12 week summer break.
