I got done for speeding in Austria at Christmas (I assume it was a speed camera) and Sixt charged me an admin fee for working out who had rented the car at the time it was "seen" speeding. I maintain my innocence though!

Just spoken to hertz, they said the info was requested for an offence 20 min before dropping off. Asked for evidence that plod has requested it and they can't provide it.

They tried to charge me 89€ winterisation fee when I had paid in uk already, hence me being dubious that they genuinely did request it

I will be avoiding hertz next time

I have only used Avis in recent years, they're a BA partner so automatically booked through Avios anyway for me. However, wished I had booked Hertz when arriving at Munich on the midday LHR Saturday flight when there must have been 30 people queuing for Avis with ONE desk open, and all 3 staff on Hertz sitting their sniggering with no one to serve.

However, March 2015 I apparently got reported speeding in the Oetz valley, the police tracked the vehicle down to Avis from Munich airport, Avis duly charged me a £10 admin fee on my credit card statement 3 months later, no contact letter or email advising me of this, and then the police penalty charge arrived. I could have ignored it, but I had already booked to go back and use Avis again from Munich, so didn't fancy the possible consequences. It was a 25 Euro fine for being 5kmh over the limit.

As for winterisation, this is a big issue which many car rental companies try on with customers. Depending in where you rent, cars should automatically be issued with winter tyres, but they can charge you extra for renting chains, roof boxes, ski racks etc. Germany/Austria have laws in place about cars having to have winter tyres, so don't let anyone try that one on you, alternatively insist they take the winter tyres off as you don't want to pay for them, and strangely enough they won't be able to comply!!!
Not sure about France or Switzerland as I don't know if its legal to have winter tyres, but "winterisation" can cover a host of other things not just tyres. I assume you had documentation with you confirming you had already had this agreed or paid for in the UK before you went?

Anyway, if you had a vignette and assuming it was valid, in the right place, and stuck to the window not displayed in a plastic sleeve (seriously, trust me.....), sounds like this will be a speeding fine.

Cheers tony, waiting for the court summons!

Did you tell your UK insurance company that you have a European speeding fine?

I am already negotiating with the Swiss authorities as I type this :) How many Toblerones do you think I should settle on?
