I'd endorse Valmorel as a good choice for kids.
Compact, car free, everything pretty accessible etc.
And decent skiing!

Closer by then the Alps and cheap and specialised in welcoming families with lots of other activities (snow shoeing, poney rides, great tobogganing slopes for children & adults, etc.) is Le Mont-Dore/Sancy.

Yes, Le Mont Dore and Super-Besse are great - when the snow is good. We have happily skied there in superb conditions and the terrain (extinct volcanoes) is as good as any small resort in the Alps or Pyrenees BUT I wouldn't ever rely on conditions being good enough to book a ski holiday in advance.
Having said that, anyone who enjoys a multi-activity winter holiday, who is self-sufficient in French and enjoys a holiday with a difference should give Sancy some consideration. http://www.sancy.com/

Unfortunately the sancy.com website is (still) only in French. But on http://www.auvergne-tourism.com/alpine-snow-sports-32-2.html you will find information in English.

Regarding the conditions; 70% of the slopes in Le Mont-Dore and 80% of the slopes in Super-Besse will have snow canons as of this season. And I know they work; from our house we could see them being tested last week ;-)

Can speak very highly of Samoens - great beginner area at the top of the bubble from town so quite exciting for new skiers to actually be 'up in the mountian' rather than down in the village as they often are. Stunning village too which ticks that box...

cheers

Hello, you can try Vallorcine in Chamonix valley, in the french alps.
It's a very nice mountain resort for families.

It's not in France!

Have you had a look at Les Gets? - It's a short transfer from Geneva, has dedicated ski areas for children, an ice skating rink, lots of activities for children & families & a free train to transport you around the village.

The plan is.... there's no plan!
