Chamonix is unique. It's likely to blow your socks clean off. Mont Blanc dominates the town, it's everywhere you turn. The town is quite big and has a year round life away from skiing, which means it's lively until late, or early depending on your outlook.
No matter how good a skier you think you are, you will be sharing uplift with ski professionals every day as loads of pro skiers and boarders live there year round. It would likely be unwise to simply follow their tracks IYKWIM :D
Lots of independent UIAGM Guides available locally to help you get the best from the valley.

Im off on the 23rd too, 4 of us are going. Would like to have a bash at the vallee blanche but i've heard it can be pretty dangerous early on in the season. See how it goes when I get out there, got a man on the ground keeping me posted on whats going on, so i'll get live weather forcasts!
