Just seen a report saying summer holiday bookings from us Brits are looking pretty healthy despite the economic worries; this is being termed the "sod it" factor...

I've also heard from folk with ski-related businesses, and this sounds right, that they think many skiers would rather miss out on a summer holiday than cancel their skiing plans. You can count me in that group!

So is the crunch in your credit affecting your holiday plans? Already booked for next season or leaving it late for a last-minute deal? Going self-catering instead of luxury catered?

If you'd rather not be specific about your own plans, who's got some tips for skiing to a budget?

A few are fairly obvious;
  • avoid school holiday periods,

  • book accommodation out of resort and "commute in",

  • go to the lesser known stations where prices are geared to local people.

  • ...

So... who's in the "sod it" camp? 8)

I've been camping for the full 18 years of my life. Then again this whole "crunch" thing isn't effecting my outgoings much!

Holidays are the most important thing in our lives so the Sod It attitude is in full flow in this household. However, if I had a gun pointed at me to make a decision it'd be skiing over beach any day.

In about 5 years time my eldest will probably rather go to faliraki with his mates than go away with us so we're making the most of it!

Credit crunch affects us a bit, well not me people will always need medicines, but Hubby self employed with his own glazing business. People have not been replacing their windows or conservatory's as much. Not to bothered about summer holidays we live by the sea any-way. We will never give up our winter hols, we would give up a lot to be able to do those. Have just had an enforced 3 weeks off work recovering from an unexpected op, so have had 3 weeks lazing around.

I will economise where I can and as I need to in order to have as many holidays as possible.

There are some fantastic deals to be had (like the one TonyH has found for our week in St Anton in January).

Skiing remains a priority for me.

  • Go to Austria or Italy, not France or Switzerland. Daily living costs are much cheaper.
If approaching Senior age, go to Austria, lift pass reductions start 5 years earlier than France or Switzerland.
If going to a resort for 2 weeks or more, check out the season lift pass cost. Usually same or even cheaper.
Look for accomodation close to an outlying T bar, almost always cheaper.
Take an apple and a sandwich tucked into your jacket pocket. Eat on the gondola, cheaper, and you get more skiing in.
If you go to the same resort every year, leave your skis there.
Get accomodation with a balcony. Great for sitting out with Supermarket wine/nibbles.
If in classes check the joint class/hire/pass deals.
    Don't buy red salopettes.
In fact, don't buy any ski clothes, unless what you have has too many holes in.
If you hire skis, check out SKI SET.
If you have unused airmiles, hire your car with them. Unlike flights, there are no additional charges.
If you hire a car twice a year or more, get your excess insurance through insurance4carhire.
Always check with Tony H if you are paying too much for your package holiday!

Just sold my "ski" car so I can take a few trips to Utah.

Just sold my two windsurfers so I can take another trip to Europe

Just took on an "extra" project in Middle East to pay for ski trip to Alaska.

Just took an inventory of my skis to determine which I must "sell"

Just accepted 50 more students in Tuning course so I can get an extra two weeks in Alberta.

Just sold a 15 pair Thule ski carrier for $300 so I can get season pass at local ski resort!

Soon will be inviting some of you to share costs during my trips! (I am doing video in 10 ski resorts)!

It is a question of priorities!

Skiing to me is number 1 so,,,,

    Look at it another way:

With the credit cruch there will be lots of cheap deals to be had on grear and trips.

I'm not exactly rolling in cash at the best of times but I'm puting away the cash now to get the bargains when they appear.
