Prepping the base and doing your edges is the sort of behaviour skiers exhibit. I wonder if you are hankering after freeing your feet )

Waterproof is a relative term for clothes. Unless you have an impermeable membrane then everything has a saturation point and will let water in sooner or later. Mostly the idea Goretex is waterproof is a sham, the true life is often only around 20 days before performance is degraded.

Have your Hestra's ever let in water? I have no evidence that mine have leaked, though the leather does get soggy and feel heavy in warm wet conditions.

If I purchased a goretex product and it degraded after 20 days or so, the retailer would be receiving a parcel from me, since the typical warranty is a year.

They do get a lot of returns but bear in mind 20 days use is around a year for most people. Mostly people are secretly perfectly happy with this, they want a new jacket every year or anyway.

There seem to be lots of happy users leaving comments. I'm guessing that by my using the Hestra Balm I'm adding to the waterproofing.

Bandit,

Quoted from the Hestra site

Outer material
Upper section made of wind and waterproof, breathable Hestra Triton/polyamide fabric. Proofed Army Leather goat palm.

Only the upper section(back of palm and cuffs) is waterproof in the sense that water will not soak through or leak through the seams. The leather section isn't waterproof in the usual sense of the word, that was my point.

With that said, mine didn't leak under skiing conditions but, like you found out also, did get soggy under warmer conditions. However my hands were still totally dry, snug & toasty all day despite that.

They are great gloves, more glove than I need at the moment bought as a long term investment after my first pair of gloves, two weeks use, gained a shredded index finger and palm from holding skis along the sharp edges.

Ah,yes, good points and quite true for a lot of folks. Now, can I justify a new jacket, as I've been wearing the same one for 2 winters :D

 Glove thread..sorry

This has all got very technical. I was hoping to find out whether, generally, people buy on price, if features are particularly important (I guessed they would be for the likes of Ise and Bandit etc) or whether people just renew something they had before because they were warm.

Interesting input though, thanks.

I see Dave Mac wears red ones, to match his undies and suspenders )
Classy.
