Got bored skiing in Bulgaria. I can ski with closed eyes in Borovetc, not sure about Bansko, because they changed it so much :( And u cant compare the ski experience in Bulgaria with Switzerland, Italy or the Alps generally. Summer holidays in Bulgaria, winter holidays in Bulgaria. My kids got bored, what about their born and bred Bulgarian mother :) Dont wanna mention all the friends and relatives there that we have to meet otherwise they will take it very personally. And i want just a quiet holiday!
These are some of the reasons why one Bulgarian wouldnt go ski in Bulgaria this winter ;)

Having been to Pamporovo and Bansko in the first few years of taking up skiing/snowboarding, I would say that people are sometimes a little quick to critisize the Bulgarian resorts.

Sure, they are not a patch on the good resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland etc etc, but if you are looking for a cheap week on the snow, or are total beginners and don't know any different, I wouldnt completely rule it out. It is cheap and there are enough runs (especially in Bansko) to keep everyone but experts amused for a week.

I totally agree with Esrg above. I am in Bansko at the moment with my boyfriend. We came out here for a cheap skiing holiday. Growing up I skied the Alps (Zermatt, Verbier, and the like). Having not skied for about 10 years then about 5 I wanted to have a few lessons. My boyfriend also hasn't skied since he was young so he also wanted lessons.

We paid 590 EUR pp for 2 weeks for accommodation + breakfast, ski equipment hire, 12 days tuition, lift pass, transfer from the airport. It is like paying for a 2 star hotel and expecting to get a 5 star one. Bulgaria is not the Alps and as long as you know that before you arrive you will not be disappointed.

We are having a fantastic time so far. The slopes are a little icy in areas because of the warm temperatures and the snow is being made by the snow cannons as it has not snowed in a while. You do need strong legs though through some of the icier patches.

I find the town a little smokey at night because of all the wood burning fires and our hotel is a little warm (they have this central heating that can't be turned off inside the room) which is a little annoying because it is like a sauna in the room and if you open the door it smells like an ashtray. The hotel also has dry walling between the rooms so it is cheap but noisy which is not so much fun when kids run up and down the stairs.

All in all we did not expect luxury and it has reignited our love of skiing. When we do get a little better perhaps we will alternate between a good resort and Bansko. The food here is amazing. As a fussy eater I have never been so happy with the quality of food!!!

So come and enjoy but don't expect too much.

We went there xmas 07 with Nielsen and stayed at the Eagle's nest. The skiing was good as was the instruction, accommadation and ski hire kit. Ate out most nights and found the food reasonably priced and perfectly edible (not of French standards, but not French prices).

It is true that there are a large amount of counterfeit goods on sale, but I was in Spain recently and it was worse there.

Did not see any "Ladies of the night" but I am reliably informed that they are not confined to Bansko or Bulgaria.

It is still probably the cheapest place to go for a ski holiday when you add it all up.

There are large que's on the first lift if you get there at the wrong time. We got ther early and once further up the lift que's were small.

We would go again if we were looking for that kind of holiday
but recently we have found the French Alps more to our taste so go there.

Bansco has such a great potential but I was a bit disappointed with whole infrastructure. They really lack modern accommodation services

Hi,

I'm going to Bansko in January for the first time. It's just me and my gf (late 20's/early 30's) with no kids or other company. Last year we skied in Ski Welt region in Austria.
The choice this year was mainly based on budget constraints: either ski in Bulgaria or no skiing at all.
We're going there for only 3 days, right after the new year (to avoid the horrific xmas & new year queues).

Is it really that bad in Bansko? Have things changed much since 2006-2009 (when most bad reviews were done)?

We don't care about counterfeit products.
Dancers, strippers, escorts (or whatever they are) don't bother me as long as they're not sitting on my plate.
To me a skiing holiday is mostly about you know, skiing (in saying that I must admit I'm still somewhat of a beginner/intermediate skier).
We're also not terribly fussy about the food, though we're not too keen on food poisoning either :))

One thing I particularly like - on paper at least - is the fact that you can descend on blue runs all the way from the top (~2600m) in an impressive 16km combo, something that Ski Welt area does not offer.

If you have been there recently please share your honest thoughts.
Is there any way to avoid the queues, e.g. get up at 7?
