Have been watching the
Courmayeur webcams since we returned on 10th March with huge envy (even though we did get fresh powder during our week :D ) - what conditions into April there and all over the Alps! But now the sun is taking over, as it should.
I don't know whether to be happy or sad when I watch the melt.
It means it's all over for this year BUT ... without the melt, how can we enjoy that first time next Autumn when we log on to see the grazing cows, the green pastures, the bronzing larches and the summer walkers have gone, and the first snowfall has spread a quiet blanket back over the familiar runs.
And we can imagine the wood-fired pizza ovens firing up once again ... that sound of the bubble-lift doors closing when you've plonked your skis in the rack and sit down to de-mist your goggles, blow your nose, re-apply lip-salve and then panic slightly, realising you're just arriving at the top ... the 'ker-bommpf, bommpf, bommpf' noise of the chair lift running over the pylons ... and the hissing, icy descent over the first corduroyed piste of the day ...
So here's to a season well skied (and boarded!) and here's to the one to come.
