Well plenty of snow left here in Chamonix but rain in town this morning. Top of the Midi and Grand Montets must be really accumulating and Friday is supposed to be the big snow day. Was going to skin up this morning but rain has kept me in for now. Have been hitting gym and biking or skinning every day so pretty confident now on knee. Just need to work on ankle flexibility and think will be as good as new in 2 months.

Big plans for Summer, Cervinia in July and then Mont Blanc , Zinalrothorn and Eigar planned for late summer, so plenty of reasons to keep working hard and getting ready for next season. 2012-2013 not exactly a classic, 1 run downhill so far.

1 run downhill...

Not great. Why? Still I guess you also do touring uphill, which is just a great in its way.

I flew to Innsbruck for the weekend (expensive flight :-/), got to my favourite resort and found it closed (there were tourers, who are equipped to walk up, skiing, but no lifts open). Went elsewhere and did two shortish runs, it was horribly foggy at the top, and weather forecast for all nearby resorts was equally bad. Something was telling me it is over. Next time I go (which I do also out of ski season) it will time for the spring ritual of putting out the garden table and sun umbrella and making Pimms or Aperol spritzers. May do a glacier day. Real addicts must either go to New Zealand now or at least get into roller skiing in Hyde Park....

Edited 1 time. Last update at 11-Apr-2013

Ruptured ACL end of last season so whole season out with injury. Definitely something worth avoiding. Basically long way back from injury. Right now knee is good just at full extension (injury from hyper extension) feels dodgy (might be in the mind). So if you see someone walking on their heels could well be me as best practice to get confidence back in that range.

Only other issue now is ankle flexibility which I want to fix before going hard again. Basically lost some flexibility in calf from them being activated for knee stability since injurt. I advise everyone to check this, do a deep squat and get someone to take a photo from side. If you have stiff ankles picture will clearly show body and lower legs are not parallel (body will be tilted forward). Repeat same with a wedge under heel. 2 x reasons for fixing before you ski again. 1st means with knees bent you will have trouble transferring weight to front of skis. 2nd reasons is that when this range is limited your knee will have a tendency to roll inwards (danger position). Lots of time now on stairs stretching calf, ideally would be close to being able to stack up heel, calf, knee, hip (I have about 25 deg to regain). So anyone wanting to avoid knee injury think ankles.

Not yet, but I've skied in Tignes in August and would definitely do it again.

Skiing in the morning, bike riding or rafting in the afternoon and watching the sun go down over the mountains on a warm summer evening makes for a pretty good holiday by anyone's standards...

And as it happens, this just in from L2A...

Best wishes for recovery.

Funny how knee problems are tied in with other things. Over-developed quad muscles I heard yesterday from my rollerblade teacher can also cause knee problems. It is tough skiing I think for anyone without strong kneee. A friend who is a fit young guy from the Pyrennese (so skiing should be second nature) but can probably not ski ever again after smashing a knee against a tree while boarding in the woods. At least you are doing a bit better than he is, and are on the mend, so some good news there, even though it is taking a while.

Anyone know anything about this summer skiing?
Had a look. No measurements but I'm guessing they're tiddly runs?

Still reading and already planning for next year. :D

Will also try to upload some photos from our March Dolomites trip. It was my best ever week on skis, which given the amount of great ski trips I've had previously is saying something. I can now safely say that I love skiing powder but moguls are evil and I think always will be.

My back still hurts from a mogul–related high speed wipeout on my last day and it's now 3 weeks later.
