These are the way forward http://www.snowboard-asylum.com/products/e-diddy-belt-pack/4877,so much so i've taken the braces that came with my other trousers off .
I suppose its just a big shoelace with a quick release buckle ,but it works great.

The problem i see with braces is that you have to get the tension perfect or they either hang low or ride high and riding high is not the best look for a man . :-)
