The inference, indeed the implication, I took from your post Ian was that because you'd never seen one, then none of them do it. If that was an incorrect conclusion, then I apologise with no reservation and without prejudice!
However, I think that one day in the not too distant future, some insurers will require a properly-fitted, industry standard approved helmets to be worn.
I don't think this would be a good thing but I think it will happen. And I would like to point out that on a few occasions, I like to ski without any headwear at all.

I too would like to ski without head gear, but I think due to lack of cranial coverage I may have a sore head.
Well it wasn't technically a spring day, but last week temperatures were high during the day. MrEvs and I discussed helmets and both said that we'd prefer not to be wearing them with it being so warm. It was very tempting to abandon them. He said 'yeah but the one time I take it off would be the one time I need it'. Turned out to be prophetic. Within 2 days he made a mistake (damn him for being human), high sided and landed heavily on his head. No way of telling exactly what would or wouldn't have happened without it, but both of us were glad his noggin had a bit of extra protection.
I still believe in personal choice though.

I've reached the conclusion that people who wear helmets are both bullies and think they're better than people who don't.

I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain
