I'm not a new skier, just new to skiing in the alps I meant. Nursery slopes would not be scary but venturing off alone which I will do as I am going alone could be....mainly because I have a poor sense of direction. I had an alpine season of mountaineering in my student years and would definitely have walked over a precipice in the fog going on my gut feeling but the compass said otherwise...which of course we trusted and followed.
I have to trust the piste signs are good and will not be afraid to ask for help.
Either way this can't be as scary as childbirth or the dentist ...

Jadavi - I know you're not really a beginner - that's what the wink was for ;)
It's just that when I can't see further than a few feet in front of me, because of heavy snow or fog or whatever, I reckon the nursery slopes would be the ones to stay on - because at least I wouldn't get lost!
Sometimes the piste signs are missing. There was definitely no sign to the lift at that junction where we went wrong. I looked most carefully when we went past it the second time!
That was one of my complaints on about page one of this thread about ski hosting coming to an end. They really need to improve the piste maps (they all seem to have mistakes on them), signposts at lifts and junctions, and piste gradings (as to whether it's graded as a blue or a red etc.). If these were improved I might actually be able to ski around without a ski host to guide me!

Thanks.didn't realize that was a wink!
I'm.getting a private lesson on my.first day so hopefully that'll orient me.
I have also met another female skier on here (yay) who is flying out with me, sharing my room, my lesson and maybe we'll ski together :) so looks like I won't be alone much.
That is what I call a result! Yay for this forum :)

Hi Jadavi :)
You haven't really hi-jacked this thread because everything you've said is relevant to coping without a ski host.
If someone (like yourself) is ski-ing on their own and doesn't know the resort, and it's a big ski area, then it can be quite scary.
One of the solutions is clearly to find a ski buddy through a forum like this one, so that you're no longer ski-ing on your own. Being lost isn't nearly so scary when there are at least 2 of you lost together
Another solution is to have a ski lesson (like you're doing) and hope the instructor helps you to find your way around.

I've just had a reply to the e-mail I sent on 22nd February to my Welsh Euro MP about ski hosting ending in France.
Apparently, they are now 'investigating the matter'. I find it totally incredible that it's taken them THIS LONG to get around to this.
What are all those Euro MP's doing, in Strasbourg, or Brussels, or wherever it is that they hang out? :?:
