By the sounds of it you'd be better off in passo T with its big wide open runs, and the hospitality is second to none!

does anyone know if the skiing is generally good in Cortina Italy in the first week of march? Do the lifts have safety bars?

All european lifts have safety bars. Early March is one of my 2 favourite weeks to ski, its usually got the most snow and nice long days, and sunny too maybe.

I'm going to Dolomites next month and that will be my fifth time there (all the way from New Zealand). I just love it - the sheer size, the well-groomed pistes, fantastic scenery, great food and bars etc. I've always found the Italians friendly. I've also skied St Anton and will be going to Saalbach this year. In the Dolomites I reckon Alpe di Suisi would be great for rusty intermediates. From there you can easily connect to the wider Val Gardena area as well.

I would avoid Cervinia in Jan, it's too high and the weather can be brutal, much better in mid-March. Look at the webcams in Montgenevre (Fr) - quiet, reasonably cheap ,friendly and with a large area to go at - you can do a day over in Sestriere (It) by bus. I must admit we did not like Sauze at all. I think Turin airport is the nearest.

Pila in the Acosta valley - fly into Turin. Great instructors for kids, lovely small ski area for the adults - never too far away from the children's lessons. Pila 2000 area has entertainment for youngsters, sledging, parks etc. Experience from Feb this year is that you'll still find Italy way cheaper than France.

Sorry but I wouldnt recommend Passo Tonale as if you are a half competant skier you will ski it out in max two days as its only 70kms
Carving leaves me all on edge
