Indeed, one of the main reasons for wanting to go back. In fact everywhere I've been in Italy, the people have been particularly friendly and amusing.

Its France where you get the cold shoulder treatment and have to poke people with ski poles.

Went to cervinia in feb 2011 loved it plenty of wide runs for intermediates and great for beginners also lots to go at for improving whatever level you are at great lifts and the bonus you can ski into zermatt in switzerland which was a great experience cervenia town is welcoming with a great play and eating area near the lifts and they dont eat the kids.

I was going to recommend La Thuile, but see you've already been there and don't consider it suitable for beginners because of there being no easy runs back to the resort. I went to Courmayeur two seasons ago and would definitely not recommend it for beginners. It's been downgraded to being less suitable for beginners since I went. On our pass that year we could go to La Thuile for one day. I loved it and I think that resort is the only reason I had the confidence to ski again the following season - at La Thuile. OK, so the only way off the mountain from the main slopes is by gondola, but the wealth of blue runs all next to each other makes that worth it. There is a blue back to resort if you go up on the chair lift next to the nursery slopes. The reds are also fantastic for beginner or rusty intermediates. I would love to go back there, but my OH suggested trying another resort so we're going to Sestriere. Hope it's as good there as La Thuile.

I liked Sestriere, but we always visited it on the lift pass from Sauze as its nicer to stay over there. Sestriere is all a bit fake and soulless, but the skiing is excellent there. Make sure you get over to Sauze and Sansicario, and also Claviere and Montgenevre - dont believe what people say about it taking forever to get there; if youre competent intermediates it will take you no more than a couple of hours from one end of the area to the other.

I have been to Selva & Maddona in recent years--lots of good skiing for intermediates especially. Terrific scenery and reasonable prices also decent infrastructure on the lift systems etc.Can only speak for myself of course but personally always found the Italians helpful & polite in the hotels & on pistes etc.
